Name: Chi Lee
Location: Los Angeles, California, USA
Please tell us about yourself.
My name is Chi Lee, I’m a Los Angeles based Fashion/Portrait and Architectural Photographer. I attended the Art Institute of California in Hollywood, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Digital Photography.
Do you shoot digitally, on film, or both? Do you have a preference?
I shoot digitally, but once in a while I like photographing architecture with 4×5 camera in transparent film. I prefer to photograph digitally because all the work I do usually related to commercial photography and my clients need their images in digital.
How long have you been taking pictures?
I’ve been photographing since 1997. My very first camera was Kalimar 35mm film, then I switched to digital camera in 2006.
What is/are your favorite Petzval and camera set-up?
I like pairing Petzval lens with my Nikon D800. I find that swirly bokeh is more effective because of D800’s high dynamic range.
Any challenges you encountered while using the new Petzval Lens?
Yes, I was having a hard time with focusing in the beginning but I had it all figured out after couple photo sessions.
What do you like most about the new Petzval lens?
I like the strong color saturation and swirly bokeh effect.
Tell us about your winning photo for the Petzval Apprentice competition.
I was very excited to see my winning photo as a thumbnail photo for your announcement.
What advice would you give to new Petzval users?
I have a couple. First advice is be patient with the lens, it can be hard to focus at the beginning and I’m sure you will get to used it in no time. My second advice is go with f/4 for better focusing.
Thank you to Chi Lee for this interview!
