Skate Spots Around the World: A Skater and his Shadow

While walking in Como with my Praktica camera, I found a young skater at a square in my city. After having chosen an elevated position on an overpass, I mounted my 85mm lens and played about with his performance and his shadow. Check it out after the jump!

A few hundreds meters outside the historical center of my city Como is a big square dedicated in part to a parking lot and to a basketball court in another. Its surface is made of a light gray concrete material. This is also a great place to practice skateboarding, as you can see in these photos.

I was here an hour before sunset, in a warm and sunny day in early March. The shadows were so long, so pretty, that I decided to take this series of photos.

This place is located in the middle of Via Castelnuovo, about 200 meters from the train station of Como Nord Borghi. Nearby is the local university with the departments of physics, mathematics and engineering.

These photos were taken through the grates of a tower that provides access to pedestrians crossing the busy road, and which also leads from the square to the university. The grates caused the “vignetting effect” in some of these images!

The concrete is flat and pretty smooth, good for beginners.

There are no ramps or other artificial obstacles such as steps and parabolic curves so beloved by experienced skaters, but this place is great in learning the basics of skateboarding.

I chose to shoot in black and white because I wanted to avoid the green color of the grass present in some photos, concentrating mainly on the skater and his long shadow.

I’ll close this article with a tipster: when you are photographing large squares from above, it is interesting to shoot early in the morning or just before sunset, when the shadow effects are incredible!

A Salute to the Masters: Ice Skating (A Tribute to Monte Fresco)

This article is dedicated to one of the finest British sport photographers, Monte Fresco. In his 30 years of reportage for the Daily Mirror, he took some of the most iconic photographs in sporting history. He covered football, tennis, and boxing. But it is his ice skating pictures that I am most fascinated with. Using my own lens, I give him a modern tribute.

A Salute to the Masters: R.I.P. (A Tribute to George Krause)

This article is dedicated to the multifaceted American photographer George Krause and to his series depicting funeral monuments realized between 1962 and 1963. I was able to know about this series thanks to an important essay on photography written by former Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Director of Photography, John Szarkowski. For this tribute, I loaded my trusty Praktica camera with a roll of Ilford film and took a series of photos in the Monumental Cemetery in my city, Como. Take a look!

Happenings on Film: Graffiti Contest for Expo 2015

On the last Saturday of July, the old district of Borgo Vico hosted an art and music festival. There was also a graffiti contest, and the winner will exhibit his work at the Como Business Center for Expo 2015. I used my Zorki 4 loaded with an Ilford FP4+ film to document the event. I focused on the young artists who, amid the swirl of activity, had to concentrate on their large-scale pieces.

    Object of My Affection: Subbuteo

In my early adolescence, I liked to play table football. For my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me with a wonderful Subbuteo table soccer game set that I had wished for many months! This was my favorite toy until I discovered other interesting hobbies, like ham radio and electronics. So after some years, I gave away this game to other kids. I always remembered this game with pleasure and a hint of nostalgia.

'Aniki-Bòbò': A Tribute to Manoel De Oliveira

This article is a tribute to the great Portuguese film director Manoel de Oliveira, who died last April 2. With an old Praktica loaded with a roll of black and white film, I captured so enthusiastically his city Oporto (Porto) with its famous Ribeira district, the most characteristic of the Lusitanian town. It was here that more than 70 years ago, Manoel De Oliveira created a timeless masterpiece: "Aniki-Bòbò"!

Reviving An Old Polaroid 1000 Camera

Some time ago, my parents-in-law gave me an old Polaroid camera that they used during my wife's childhood. After some investigation, I found out that Polaroid had stopped making instant film. But the factory in Enschedé, the Netherlands had been taken over by The Impossible Project, so I bought a package of fresh film and gave it a try!

Travel Stories: The Bolivian Highlands by lonur

My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.

Testing a Yashica TLR Camera After 55 Years in Storage

Though I am not a professional, photography is in my genes. My father was a photographer and technician in the Air Force and accumulated a number of cameras during his life. This is a story about one of those cameras, a Yashica 635 TLR. I brought the camera—after being in storage for about 55 years—back to life with a roll of Portra 160 during the golden hour at Bellevue Botanical Gardens in Washington.

The World According to Herr Willie: Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Singapore, like Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, is a likely stopover when you fly far. The city is a tiny urbanized hub but it's very favorable if you know some high-spirited locals. I was lucky to hook up with king kimbo (@hakimbo), who showed me around. He took my lame limbs to the Gardens by the Bay, an amazing place which was visually striking. I was hugging some artificial trees there when I found a baby—a very big baby.
