The great American photographer David Burnett is famous for his unusual photos of sports competitions. He uses a tilt-shift lens to create miniature fakes, or a simple Holga camera to shoot in black and white. To write this tribute, I used my Holga to take some pictures of amateur sport activities around my city. Take a look after the jump.
The legendary Holga is one of the most interesting toy cameras for the summer season. As you can see in the book The The World Through A Plastic Lens it is capable of amazing results. And if it is in the hands of a great master of sports photography, as David Burnett, the results are truly unique!
He was born in 1946, and after his graduation from Colorado College in 1968, he began to work freelance. His first great photojournalistic work was in 1972 in Vietnam, followed by his service in Chile (1973), while in 1979 he documented the Iranian revolution.
In 2008 he took this miniature fake during the Chinese Olympic Games. Here another example from the same event, a baseball match, and here the extraordinary victory of Usain Bolt in the 200 metres race. To obtain this effect he used a large format camera, a Speed Graphic 4 × 5 inch. Whit this camera he took also some photos of the John Kerry presidential campaign.
One of his most interesting albums is The Holga Eye, where you can find a photo of Al Gore 2000 campain, and some nice photos from Salt Lake Winter Olympics games. For example, here you can see an image of a skeleton competition, a sky jumper and a bob of the Austrian team! Lomographic photos of an Austrian bob is a great tribute to the Lomography World! So, to write this article, I chose a series of photos of amatorial sport teams or public sport demonstrations. The images were taken in my city Como or few kilometers south, in the small town of Cantù (for the photos of a students athletics championship).
A Salute to the Masters is a series dedicated to great photographers that I like. I posted other tributes for Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, Helen Levitt, Ernst Haas, Stephen Shore, Gabriele Basilico, Robert Adams, Thomas Struth, J.H. Lartigue, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Frank, Gianni Berengo Gardin, André Kertész, Willy Ronis, Brassaï, Rodchenko, Dan Graham, Henry Grant, William Eggleston, Dennis Stock, Juergen Teller, Martin Parr, Peter Mitchell, Mario Giacomelli and Izis Bidermanas. I especially love street photography and urban architectural photography.
