Among many equally enticing choices, Paula picked the Diana Mini as her first Lomography camera because of its adorable size and cuteness. Although she now considers her trusty LC-A+ as her inseparable friend, she still misses having that distinct dreamy Diana Mini charm in her snapshots. Please tell us more about yourself.
I’m a 28-year-old Spanish girl who grew up in China. I moved back to Spain three years ago, so I guess I’m caught between these two cultures. I work as a Chinese teacher in Bilbao. Besides taking pictures, I like to read and play the guitar.
When was your first try of a Lomography camera or film? What product was it?
My first try of a Lomography camera was in 2010. It was a Diana Mini.
Was the Lomography product yours or did you borrow it from a relative or friend?
It was mine. Two friends of mine had a few Lomo cameras and they showed me some amazing pictures. I got so attracted that I decided to try Lomography myself. I went to the Lomography Embassy Store in Shanghai and saw all the beautiful cameras. I was afraid that I would not be good at this, so I bought a Diana Mini, since it was one of the cheapest cameras. And yes because the Diana Mini is sooooo cute and small!
How was the experience? Any funny or strange occurrences?
The feeling of bringing the camera close to your face and shooting without immediately seeing the result was amazing! I felt free to take pics without thinking too much! But of course, the first results were a disaster -almost all the photos were underexposed, and I got all the distances wrong. But little by little, you will learn from these mistakes. The excitement you get when you make a nice picture is priceless!
Have you used that Lomography product again? Why or why not?
Yes, but not as frequent as I did before. Three years ago, I bought the LC-A+. Since it makes better quality photos and its built-in lightmeter is so convenient, it became my inseparable friend. Although, I miss that special touch the Diana Mini gives to the photos.
Can you share with us your favorite or most memorable shot from that First Lomo Affair of yours? Why is it your favorite?
This is my favorite Diana Mini shot. It’s just a simple shot of the sand and the sea taken without thinking too much. But the picture can surprise you – the light of the sun, the beautiful warm colors, the depth and the curve of the sea…it’s perfect!
How did it affect your love for Lomography/film photography?
This photo had a direct effect on my love for Lomography. I won a poetry competition by Lomography Spain with my Diana Mini and it helped me realize that maybe I’m not bad at taking photographs. Also, it made me see how film cameras can make amazing things that digital cannot. Then, I rewarded myself an LC-A+ and that was the start of my lomo craziness.
