Doubles With You: Mafiosa and AlburnKat: Calgary vs Depot Town by Mafiosa and Alburnkat

Enjoy twice the analogue goodness with this big comeback of your favorite film swap series, Doubles With You!

And to kick-off the return of this series, we are bringing you the best of both Calgary and Michigan in this film swap by Christeen, otherwise known as *mafiosa*, and Kat Reimus, or *alburnkat* in our community, aptly named Mafiosa and AlburnKat: Calgary vs Depot Town.

For this project, both lomographers used a Lomo LC-A+ and exchanged a roll of Lomography Color Negative 100.

Let’s dive deeper into this fantastic film swap. Here are some of Christeen’s and Kat’s insights regarding this collaboration:

What did you take pictures of and where?

Christeen (C): I shot my layer on a particularly sunny and clear Autumn day in Calgary, Canada. A lot of my shots were taken at a park.

Kat Reimus (KR): I photographed around Historic Depot Town and Downtown Ypsilanti. The buildings, businesses, and any of the details of the neighborhood that caught my eye.

Credits: alburnkat

Did you and your film swap partner talk about a theme for this film swap? Why or why not?

C: We definitely discussed the possibility of following a theme, but ultimately decided to keep the swap loose and random. Either way, you’ll never know what you are going to get and that’s usually the best part. Sometimes, having a central theme makes it more difficult for one person to execute a swap.

KR: Christeen shot the first layer and sent a note that says she had photographed various locations around Calgary. I like the idea of keeping my layer in the city. Also, shooting in an older part of town would be a nice compliment to her layer. In honor of Calgary being known as Cowtown, my first stop was the Carry Dairy. It is also my way of sending my gratitude to mafiosa. (I’m so glad you enjoyed that one Christeen!)

What do you think about this film swap’s results? Please share with us your favorite photos from this swap.

C: I am very happy with the results of this swap. I have to say that my favorite photo is the one wherein Kat paid homage to my home city, Calgary, which is nicknamed Cowtown. (Thank you, dearest Kat! It didn’t go unnoticed.)

Credits: alburnkat

I also love how these photos turned out:

Credits: alburnkat

KR: I absolutely love the results. I think that is because our framing was off by exactly half a frame and Christeen did this great thing of shooting two almost mirror images at a time, my subjects fell right between hers so beautifully that some almost look panoramic.

My favorites are some of the same as Christeen’s and these:

And of course, this fire hydrant:

Did you encounter any funny or strange occurrences during this film swap?

C: None that I can recall. It was a fairly smooth swap project on all fronts.

KR: I’m thankful that Christeen had a sunny day to shoot. When I left my house, I saw a clear blue sky, but by the time I had reached Ypsi, the sky had suddenly turned gray. But, you couldn’t tell from looking at this album and a great example is this photograph:

Would you like to do more film swaps soon? Anyone in mind? Or a theme perhaps?

C: It’s always fun to do film swaps. I love having the opportunity to communicate with people from all over the world and share frames with all of these exotic locations. I have a few theme and ideas in mind for future projects, but sometimes themes can feel restrictive and can make the projects more difficult to complete. Keeping it random allows both people to be free to shoot whatever and however they want.

KR: When I first stumbled on this site and started my return to film photography, I was unsure of the idea of doing a film swap. I am an only child and have been told that I am not good at sharing with others. weleasewoger72 asked if I wanted to do a swap during my first year, but I wasn’t ready. Since then, I have talked with and even met face to face with so many wonderful photographers and it made love swaps now. I think what helped me embrace the idea of doing a film swap is when I personally exchanged rolls for the first time. (Thank you, fartstorm!)

Right now, I’m trying to send a couple of rolls to clickiemcpete. Also, someday I hope to make it up to weleasewoger72. And Christeen, by next autumn, I promise I will send you a good roll of my sunflowers.

I am a Mad Analogue Scientist: New Experiments with 35mm Films and Chemicals

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. Just pick up some ideas from here, experiment, and scan your negatives with the Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Anything is possible: burning, scratching, putting on hydrochloric acid, balsamic vinegar, nail polish, bleach, or raspberry juice... use your imagination and write down your new film soup recipe! You can find a sample of the effects in this article.
