Berlin by Boat

Brace yourselves – this is about as touristy as it gets!

If you’ve ever been to Berlin before, you’ve probably noticed them: the little boats full of tourists, cruising through the city. Now, if you can overcome your fear of being identified and labelled as a tourist yourself, get on one of those boats – you won’t regret it!

Waterways are very prominent in Berlin. The river Spree goes right through the centre, and additionally there are numerous canals, connecting different parts of the city. A lot of the famous „sights“ can be accessed by boat or at least be spotted from there. And did you know that there are more bridges in Berlin than in Venice?

Discovering Berlin by boat is ideal when you’ve already had a long day of running around town behind you and feel like you can walk no more. Or if you need to save up your energy for your night-time plans but just don’t want to sit still. It’s also a great idea for your last day in the city, if you still have a couple of hours ‘til your plane or train takes you home again but you don’t feel like walking around so much with all your luggage.

Now the good news: While the boat does all the hard work of taking you around town you can relax and just simply watch as the motives roll past you – and snap away! Be quick though, the boat’s moving fast and what was a nice angle a few moments ago might not be anymore only a few seconds later.

It’s a good idea to do some research in advance, there’s a lot of different companies that offer various tours – so basically you have to know how much time you want to spend on a boat and chose the tour which interests you most, while fitting your time-schedule and budget best (while we’re at it: watch out for vouchers and discounts, they’re everywhere!).

Two last tips: For day-time tours, bring sunglasses and sun-screen! Seriously. Even if it’s not at all that sunny (trust me, I got my worst sun-burn ever on a boat in Berlin!). For night-time tours: bring additional jumpers, jackets, scarves… yes, plural! Yes, even in summer!

Photo Stories: Away With You by lomomowlem

It is clear from the wild variety of photos in the website that Lomographers will do just about anything to get a good shot. Some swap rolls with friends overseas while others concoct unheard-of film soups. And then there are the masters of operations, the ones who spy and crouch their way to a share-worthy picture. This is one such story.
