Aside from film photography, she also has a soft spot for baking and Star Wars's R2-D2. Get to know more about Erika, or efrost as she is referred to in the Community, our Newcomer of the Week.
Please tell us a little something about yourself.
I’m originally from Loveland, Colorado. It’s not exactly a small town, but there’s a huge difference between Loveland and Berlin where I’ve been living for almost a year and a half now.
I love to bake but my kitchen is tiny, my fridge is tiny. My poor roommates have to squeeze past me in the kitchen when I am baking. They also get subjected to taste testing. It can get time consuming, too! Also, we can always get those baked goods available around.
I have one semester left for my Germanic Studies and Sinology. As soon as that is all wrapped up, my plan is to study Business in Berlin.
Oh, and my favorite movie character of all time is R2-D2.
How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?
Somehow I had the idea in my head that I wanted a Ringflash for my Fisheye No. 2. Maybe I saw one in the store in Berlin months ago and the idea resurfaced? I’m not sure anymore but I learned about the Community from the website where I bought my Ringflash from. I’ve loved being part of the Community since.
As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?
That would definitely be Rule Number 1: Take your camera everywhere you go.
I even bought the Diana Baby 110 so I can always have a camera on hand. I’m sure everyone else in the Community knows those “UGH, Why didn’t I bring a camera?!” moments. I got tired of missing great photo opportunities and just decided to get one of the smallest and lightest cameras in the Lomography Store.
In this digital age, why still film?
This is a classic case of “I have a digital camera but I never use it.” It just does nothing for me. On the other hand, analog is so much fun and I can use it as a creative outlet. One of the things I love most about analogue is using multiple exposures, which I couldn’t do with most digital cameras. Even if I can, it would just would lose the all the excitement I get from using film!
Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?
My Supersampler is probably my favorite because it’s my newest camera. I’m excited to try out different things with it. I have DIY redscale film ready and LomoChrome Purple should be on its way.
What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?
Of course I would love to have the classic LC-A+. You could almost say it’s just doesn’t have quite a big difference from other Lomography cameras with various effects, but it’s also somewhat unique- from the subtle vignette to the intriguing colors and multiple exposures. Of course, being able to use 35 mm film is a plus as well.
Any song or movie you live by?
Without a doubt, Dont Look Back [sic] by D.A. Pennebaker is the movie of my life.
I don’t mean that in the sense of a story plot because the movie doesn’t follow a specific plot. Rather in the sense that I watch the movie when I’m sad, when I’m happy, when I’m lonely, when I want to be with my friends, when I want to feel inspired. To be honest, I’m surprised I haven’t burned the disc.
It’s a black and white cinema-verite sort of documentary from the 60’s, in which Bob Dylan is basically followed around by the director in “every day” situations. A dear friend in Loveland, Colorado gave the movie to me on a whim and I’ve been hooked since. I even bought myself a copy here in Germany because my life feels incomplete without it.
Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?
That’s so hard, being so new to the community, but I think mafiosa is great. She tries out so many different things with her photography and shares a lot with the community. She’s also nice and helpful, too.
Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?
Desibel because of her baby bangs!
What are you looking forward to in our Community?
I’m really looking forward to meeting other Lomographers around from the world, but I would be most excited to meet others from Berlin and Colorado. Aside from that, I always enjoy reading about the interesting tips and sharing new photos.
