Monday Moodboard: Silvia Grav's Surreal Black and White Photographs

For this week's dose of inspiration, we'll have a look at photographer Silvia Grav's striking work in monochrome.

Black and white used to be the norm when it comes to photography. Today, though, not many people take black and white photos anymore and when they do, at least based on my personal observation, they’re often portraits, photos of architecture, and street photographs – structured, elegant, gritty snapshots. But not really much featuring those that veer on the dreamy and surreal, which often fall within color photography territory.

“I never quite know how to explain it. Aesthetically, I love analogue photography- dirty, scratched. I’ve been obsessed with the black & White that old photographs possess since I’ve discovered photography, but I don’t know why. I see very clear when I find beautiful imagery, but I ignore why I’ve acquired my style. I think that this is unconscious, a set of many influences that are impossible to differentiate.” – Silvia Grav via Juxtapoz

I honestly don’t remember the last time I’ve seen photographs like these by *Silvia Grav*. I immediately liked them as soon as I stumbled upon them. Shooting in black and white again has been in my goals ever since I got back into film photography, but I have yet to come up with the right concept to do it. Just last Saturday I loaded an expired Lucky black and white film on my Canon A-1, but I was unable to shoot with it. On Sunday, my co-editor plasticpopsicle and I are set to join another tour inside the Manila Metropolitan Theater (MET) and other nearby historic places in downtown Manila.

Now that I think about it, I should probably shoot the crumbling interiors and shadowy hallways of the MET in an attempt to show its haunting beauty. Wish me luck!
