The Search For Analogue Stars: Portraits

On April 12th, we will celebrate the second ever Film Photography Day! On the same day as this joyous analogue occasion, we will kick off one of our biggest competitions ever: The Search for Analogue Stars – Portraits. For this amazing competition, we are looking for creative photographers, just like you! And what’s more, the concept couldn’t be simpler: shoot a sensational portrait of your choice with an analogue camera and submit it to us. It could be the analogue selfie which you took on the happiest day of your life, the portrait that captured the sadness of a poignant moment, the emotion of a stark black and white portrait, the color of a face-painted child and their joyful emotion – whichever portrait you pick, we would love to see it! Now, you have 6 weeks from April 12th to go out there, camera in hand, creativity in your soul. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

How are you supposed to submit a digital file if it can't be digitally manipulated?

Even the slightest changes happen when scanning in film... What about contrast? Can we do that digitally? If not - are you asking us to shoot film, then create a print in the darkroom using contrast filters and scan in the print?

  6. hembot
    hembot ·

Thanks for your question @superkingdavid! The main rule is that people to shoot on film (that's the point of the comp :) and you shouldn't massively rework your images post production as they should be true examples of great analogue shooting! Hope that's clearer.

Why in this pic of mine www.lomography.nl/homes/sizer77/albums/2014683-lomochrome-p… I can see metadata and in the same pic uploaded in the competition are the metadata invisible?!

The #1 guideline was not strictly enforced, I think. But, only one person seems to be complaining? So, next year, why don't lomography hold another competition where in the film it self would be submitted to a lomography embassy for scanning (using a standard film scanner world wide). This way, everthing would be fair. Lomography would be, and act as, "the equalizer".

  12. beblo
    beblo ·

And one more thing, why don't 1 lomography Lab (using only 1 machine) print all the entries so that the judging will be based on the photograph(s)?

  13. rnichols

There are some beautiful images that have been submitted! When do we find out the results?

@michols, we are currently looking over all the images carefully and will announce the winners very soon!

I don't think the #1 guideline has to be that straight edge as in "absolutely no digital enhancement" scanners automatically correct contrast etc so every analogue image is enhanced (unless you have physically enlarged it on a enlarger onto paper) is enhanced... I think the competition rules mean nothing that takes away from the photograph and replaces it with anything artificial... Like photoshopping out a light leak or cloning my face into the frame.

From your phrase above Mr. jourdanlynch: " (unless you have physically enlarged it on an enlarger onto paper) ", this is what I am suggesting, Sir.*@:-)

    Object of My Affection: Subbuteo

In my early adolescence, I liked to play table football. For my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me with a wonderful Subbuteo table soccer game set that I had wished for many months! This was my favorite toy until I discovered other interesting hobbies, like ham radio and electronics. So after some years, I gave away this game to other kids. I always remembered this game with pleasure and a hint of nostalgia.
