Lomography Day Trips: Get Some Rest in Tavira, Portugal

Looking for a place for a few days of rest? The little city in Tavira has great beaches, amazing nature and a Mediterranean climate: the same features as the rest of the Algarve region, but less touristy.

The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal. Its offers great beaches, a Mediterranean climate, and it’s relatively affordable, which makes it a great tourist destination. Unfortunately, it has become a victim of its own success; the whole region is super touristy and isn’t exactly authentic anymore. But luckily, there is a little city that offers the same great beaches and nature as the rest of the region, but isn’t as crowded: Tavira.

Tavira is situated 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of Faro and 160 kilometers (99 miles) west of Seville in Spain. It has some picturesque streets, colorful façades, beautiful nature, it’s the perfect place for wandering around, which is exactly what I did there:

Most people go to Tavira for the ocean and the beach, and they can’t be proved wrong. From the city center, you can take a boat to some kind of island drifting in the ocean, with nice beaches. If you’re willing to walk a little further, it is perfectly possible to find a quiet place for yourself, to lay down, read that book you always wanted to, take a dive in the ocean, sunbath or just sleep.

But there’s more! In season, you can go flamingo spotting in the salt panes of Tavira. Get up early to spot them: it’s worth the effort. And even if you can’t find any flamingos, you won’t be too disappointed, because the salt panes are already beautiful. We were lucky enough to see a few flamingos, if you look very, very, very carefully, you can see them on my pictures:

Don’t go there and think you’ll have Tavira to yourself though; the city is still pretty touristy, but far less crowded than the rest of the region. You won’t be the only tourist, but the city is still very enjoyable and definitely worth a visit!

Last Sunday, a great yoga event was held in Cernobbio, a small tourist town near the city of Como. Local association Breathe Como made a performance of power yoga exercises to raise funds for Africa. I developed the film a few days ago, and today I'll show the photos to you! I call this "Fresh From My Darkroom" because I developed the black and white films by myself! Take a look!

I backed the Kickstarter project for the Lomo’Instant earlier this year and was thrilled to receive it last week. I love how the camera naturally encourages you to experiment with its different features, whether it’s through flashing your multiple exposures with different colors or trying different creative techniques after your shots has been ejected. Here are a few tips from what I’ve discovered from playing with the camera so far (and a couple of tips I want to try out in future)!
