Fascinating Vintage Photographs from Marie-Hélène de Rothschild’s Surrealist Ball

How would you guys like to score an invite to an exclusive party as extraordinary as this one?

Hosts Marie-Hélène and Guy de Rothschild

The Surrealist Ball was held on December 12, 1972 at the Château de Ferrières, where Marie-Hélène and her second husband Guy lived beginning in 1959. Marie-Hélène was known for regularly throwing extravagant, carefully-planned parties which usually were given a creative theme, and this particular event was certainly no exception. Select members of high society, as well as some of Marie-Hélène’s famous friends like Salvador Dali and Audrey Hepburn, were in attendance at this party.

The Surrealist Ball appears odd at the very least, but we have to commend Marie-Hélène for really sticking to her theme down to the very last detail – from invitations that one can read only by holding it up before a mirror to the transformation that her home went through. Guests were requested to wear “black tie, long dresses, and Surrealists heads.” According to an account by guest Baron Alexis de Redé, Marie-Hélène herself wore a giant animal’s head that “shed” diamond tears, while Guy wore “a hat to resemble a still-life on a platter.” The château was bathed in orange lights to make it appear as if on fire, and guests reportedly had to pass through “a kind of labyrinth of Hell, made of black ribbons to look like cobwebs.”

Curious details from the Surrealist Ball

What a strange party, indeed!
