Holi

Where: India, Nepal, and other parts of the world where there are Hindus or people of Indian origin
When: February — March (falls on March 17 this year)

Undoubtedly one of the most colorful and vibrant celebrations in the world, Holi, also aptly called Festival of Colours, is primarily a celebration marking the start of the spring season. It’s one of the most important festivals for Hindus, and one of the most popular among tourists and revelers around the world. The highlight of this festival is the frenzy of people throwing colored dyes, powders, and water-based pigments at everyone out in the streets. You can only just imagine how it’s one of the most colorful events you can take photos of. One of the best parts? You can bring home a brightly-colored shirt (or two) as souvenirs!

Las Fallas

Where: Valencia, Spain
When: March 19th

A fiery festival that dates back to the 16th century, Las Fallas translates to “the fires” in Valencian. Considered as one of the craziest and most odd celebrations in Spain, Las Fallas has its origins from pagan rituals for celebrating the coming of spring. This festival involves the creation of elaborate and gigantic puppets and dolls made of paper-mache, cardboard, plaster, and wood called ninots. During the four days before March 19th, the ninots are showcased in a grand parade in the streets. When the clock strikes twelve on March 19th, the street lights are turned off and the ninots are set on fire for a flaming spectacle.

Songkran Water Festival

Where: Thailand
When: April 13 to 15 (falls on April 13 this year)

Another popular festival in Asia, Songkran Festival is Thailand’s traditional celebration of New Year’s Day. Prepare to get wet when you roam the streets, as people will be armed with buckets and water guns in a no holds barred mission to get everyone soaked for the occasion. The whole country observes Songkran, but Chiang Mai up north is still the best place to immerse yourself in this festival. As this celebration falls on the hottest month in Thailand, we’re sure getting doused in the afternoon heat will be a welcome option for you!

El Colacho (Baby Jumping) Festival

Where: Murcia, Spain
When: June

A traditional event that can be traced back to 1620, the El Colacho or Baby Jumping Festival celebrates the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi. The highlight of this week-long festivity is the El Salto del Colacho (The Devil’s Jump), wherein men dressed as the Devil (known as the Colacho) make a leap over a mattress where babies who were born in the past twelve months lie clueless. For this, El Colacho has been considered as one of the most dangerous in the world. The reason behind the dangerous jump? Tradition says that it’s done to cleanse babies of original sin, ensure good health, and ward off evil spirits.

UFO Festival

Where: Roswell, New Mexico, USA
When: Beginning of July (tentatively scheduled on July 5 – 6 this year)

Fans of all things UFO-related flock to Roswell, New Mexico every year to attend the UFO Festival, an annual celebration which looks back at the infamous crash of a mysterious object on a ranch 30 miles north of the city sometime in June or July 1947. This incident — now known as the Roswell UFO incident — remains a topic of debate and speculation, and the center of this quirky costume party for UFO fans and even their pets!

Have you ever attended any wacky, crazy, and unique celebrations like these festivals? Why don’t you share your snaps and interesting stories with us and submit a Locations article!

The World, According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.
