Discover a traditional African hospital with its garden and pharmacy.
The traditional hospital in Keur Massar, is located in a quiet village not far from the country’s congested capital, Dakar, and consists of about ten huts, each with one or two beds.
It was founded in 1985 by Yvette Parès, a french researcher who worked on leprosy. She learned a lot from traditional healers. Here, the traditional medical knowledge of traditionalism is valued, exercised and made available to patients.
Four healers see an average of 20 patients every day — mainly elderly people with rheumatic complaints, but also women seeking treatments for illnesses ranging from headaches to miscarriages. The healers also treat conditions such as asthma and tuberculosis.
We visited the garden and the pharmacy of Keur Massar. I even bought a bottle of a mixture of essential oil for cold.
One of the things that make a trip to a far-flung place truly memorable is getting the chance to interact with the locals and share fun moments with them. Five years ago, disdis was able to do exactly that on a trip to Zinguinchor, Senegal, and it goes without saying that it was most certainly one for the books.

Though I am not a professional, photography is in my genes. My father was a photographer and technician in the Air Force and accumulated a number of cameras during his life. This is a story about one of those cameras, a Yashica 635 TLR. I brought the camera—after being in storage for about 55 years—back to life with a roll of Portra 160 during the golden hour at Bellevue Botanical Gardens in Washington.
