One of music’s most famous couples tied the knot on this day 22 years ago in an eccentric yet intimate fashion in Waikiki, Hawaii.
Although they were two of the biggest names in punk-rock by that time, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love opted for a low-key wedding ceremony on a cliff overlooking a beach in Waikiki, Hawaii. Kurt and Courtney’s wedding day happened shortly after Nirvana concluded their Pacific Rim tour. At the time, Courtney was already pregnant with their child Frances Bean who would be born in August later the same year.
A nondenominational female minister presided the wedding. It was attended by a few friends of the couple, one of them being Kurt’s Nirvana band mate Dave Grohl; bassist Krist Novolesic, however, wasn’t in attendance because he was said to have opposed Kurt and Courtney’s relationship. _Feel Numb_ pegs the number of guests at only eight.
It probably comes as no surprise that Kurt and Courtney’s wedding was unconventional. The most popular anecdote from this event was how the Kurt wore green flannel pajamas because he had been “too lazy to put on a tux” and Courtney a satin and lace dress that once belonged to the late Hollywood actress Frances Farmer.
Kurt and Courtney, known as Kurtney to their avid fans, were said to have first met in 1990 although they were formally introduced to one another more than a year later in May during a Butthole Surfers concert in Los Angeles. Courtney once said that they “bonded over pharmaceuticals.” Kurt, on the other hand, was quoted as saying in referring to their relationship, “It’s like Evian water and battery acid.” Though many were reportedly in opposition of their union, the couple remained together. Unfortunately, though, their marriage lasted only for almost two years – in April 1994, Cobain was found dead.
