Pearlgirl77 is no stranger to the Lomo community. She is one of our most active and experienced members, as you can see in her LomoHome. She is obviously an ardent analogue photographer who has laid her hands on over 30 cameras, giving every camera a taste of her expertise.
We asked pearlgirl77 to try something different: the Lomography Experimental Lens kit and share her bits and pieces of her ’experimental’ experience.
1. Can you share with us your first impressions on using the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit?
Sure, at first I noticed how light they are. After I solved the problem with the T-Shutter Lever I was a little bit frightened to break something but it works really well. Then I went out to use the lenses and noticed how easy it is to shoot with them. You can handle it with the slogan in your head: DON’T THINK JUST SHOOT because you have only two focus settings and this is great.
2. How did it feel to go digital using the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit, considering your analogue photography background?
I always use digital as an addition to analogue photography, but not so often in the previous year. With the Lens Kit I’ve done more shots digitally, but not exclusively. I have more analogue cameras with me when I go out for a shoot. But I like testing and playing with the lenses, especially with the chance to do multiple exposures
- it’s really wild.
3. What do you like most about shooting with the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit?
I think it’s the easy way to do fun long exposures with the flash on a party because of the fixed focus settings. So I don’t have to wait until the camera is all set the focus to take the pictures. You can shot immediately and can do doubles too. That brings so much fun and for me I don’t need analogue pictures from a party, I just save my film now for more interesting things!
4. Which feature or function of the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit did you enjoy shooting with?
I think the best is really the multiple exposures. It’s so easy to use it in combination with the ND-Filter. My camera can do only double exposures but with the lenses there are no limits to how often I open the lens for one picture. With the filters I’ve have good experiences working with it in sunny weather. This function is really the best and it’s good for experimenting and testing. You can try it digitally at first to see how the exposure fits and do it likewise on film.
5. Which subject/s and/or technique/s do you think is/are best for shooting with the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit?
For me they are great for party pictures in combination with the Lomography Colorsplash Flash. I can do colored pictures with flash and doubles without the focus problem. In my opinion the 24mm lens is the best one because of the fixed focus on 0.6m. This fits perfectly with my arm length.I love the 12 mm Lens from this kit and I will take it to my next journey because I think it would be great for city trips. I only tested it in my hometown but I love the unsharpened edges and I’ve always loved wide lenses!
6. Please share your favorite photos from the ones you’ve taken, and tell us why you love them.
This one which I took with the orange filter and because it looks a little bit like a redscale picture. I love it!
This is my absolute favorite double exposure.
My Doll looks really creepy in this pic and that’s why it’s one of my greatest.
Nice view of my lovely town, Landshut.
I love going as near as I can to the object!
7. Any last words?
It’s great to shoot with the Lenses. It brings lot of fun and new experiences to the digital world. Everybody who has a Micro-Four-Thirds Camera and love Lomography should buy this Lens Kit. But my heart belongs to analogue photography and the lenses couldn’t ever replace any of my analogue cameras! So LOMO ON!
How about you? Have you tried the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit? If you’ve used this nifty innovation for Micro Four-Thirds cameras, then please share your experience with us by submitting a review or a lifestyle piece.
