Rock en Seine is a rock festival that occurs the last week-end of august in the park of Saint-Cloud (department of Hauts-de-Seine) in the heart of historic gardens designed by Le Nôtre.
Rock en Seine takes place in the outskirts of Paris, and this is quite an event… Before, we Parisians had to move to different places in France, or even Europe to go to such big festivals (like Belfort in France, Werchter in Belgium…) to enjoy 3 days of full time music. But not anymore!
Rock en Seine was born in 2003, with 2 scenes and 10 groups in one day… The year after, thanks to the success of the 1st edition, Rock en Seine increased its length from one to two days with two times more groups. The festival also opens to other art forms as photography with Rockfolio (photo exhibition of Claude Gassian).
Since then, every year brings some new features: the festival site has expanded to allow the installation of a third stage for a wider range of artists, and a campsite in the heart of the festival. In 2007, the festival lasted for three days and hosted around 60 000 people…
The last 2 years have been uneasy for the festival, as the main stars have cancelled their gig at the last moment… In 2008 it was Amy Winehouse, and last year it was Oasis (who announced the end of the band here!)… But despite all of this, the line-up keeps improving with a greater variety of music, from rock’n’roll to electronica, and various exhibits of artists (photographers, illustrators etc)
A great festival to mark the end of summer time taking place in the Lower Park Area National of Saint-Cloud. This site, designed by Le Nôtre in the XVII century (who also created the Versailles Gardens for king Louis XIV), is the first garden that has been classified historical monument in 1994. There are 460 acres of greenery, gardens, forest, park and ponds, woods, waterfalls and statues leading up to the Seine.
So if you’re lucky enough to be in Paris in August… That is the place to be!! :)
