Photographer Shares a Glimpse of Her Grandfather's Life Through the Belongings He Left Behind

1

While many typically turn to old pictures, letters, and journals to remember their deceased loved ones by, a photographer decided to pay homage to her grandfather and give a glimpse of his life by taking photos of all the personal possessions he left behind.

Through her touching photo series entitled Inheritance, Andrea Tese sought to create a personal documentation of her mourning after her grandfather’s passing, while also exploring his legacy and identity through the personal possessions that he left behind. Through his suitcases, cooking paraphernalia, old photos, important documents, newspaper clippings, clothes, and other things that represented his daily life, Tese painted a picture of the kind of person her grandfather was, and also added her own touches and perspectives as an artist.

Going through a deceased love one’s personal belongings, as mentioned by Flavorwire, is indeed an emotional process, yet Tese approached it with a rather deadpan manner. She arranged and grouped together her grandfather’s things according to types, grids, piles, and sometimes even playful arrangements to create what she describes as a “posthumous portrait.”

“These photographs function simultaneously as an acknowledgement to the ephemeral nature of life and as an indulgence in man’s unwillingness to give in to this understanding – his desire to arrest time, to counter anonymity, to leave something behind, to be immortal,” she also explains on her website.

If you want to see Andrea Tese’s work up-close, “Inheritance” is currently on display at De Buck Gallery in New York and will run until February 15, 2014.
