Twosday Tuesday: Penang Calling

Here at Lomography, we always like looking at the creative and random photos submitted by our community members in our downtime. And, amusingly, we find that there are a lot of snapshots that bear a striking resemblance to one another – be it in the way they were composed or in idea – even though they were taken in different parts of the globe!

In this week’s installment, we’re featuring photos of the Broken Heart street art in George Town in Penang, Malaysia. It is the work of Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, who has brightened up the streets of George Town (as well as other streets in nearby countries!) with his famous quirky, whimsical murals. According to Penang Street Art, Broken Heart can be found in Love Lane. Now, the original work only depicted two phone booths standing opposite each other, with half a heart painted on each. Perhaps it’s the implication of two hearts being distanced from one another that someone, sometime after “Broken Heart” was created, took the liberty of finally “joining” them with ropes and a signboard that says “Happily Ever After”! Talk about a happy ending!

This close-up shot of Broken Heart was taken by our very own *plasticpopsicle* of the Philippines using the Lomo LC-A+ loaded with the Kodak Ektachrome E100 GX.

Meanwhile, this shot which offers a wider perspective was taken by Malaysia-native lomographer *kelvinchew* with his Olympus MJU II loaded with the Lomography X Tungsten.

Tune in next Tuesday for the next of twin photos! In the meantime, check out our Twosday Tuesday series in the Lomography magazine!

I'm now in Penang, staying in a hostel near this area, and sad to say, the installation is no longer there. From what I've read, people were vandalizing it so it had to be taken down. :( Good thing we were able to take photos, @kelvinchew!
