Analogue Resolutions: Film-Fueled Pledges and Promises for 2014

1

It has become a habit of many to start the year with a handful of resolutions, whether to do good, get better, or stay motivated. It does feel nice to have a list of the things you want to achieve while the year is still fresh, don't you think? So, here's my list of pledges and promises for living the analogue life this year.

I promise to “disconnect” more.

By disconnecting, of course, I mean spending less time in cyberspace and more time connecting with the real world. In an age where almost everything now runs through computers, high-tech devices, and hi-speed Internet, stepping away from the online world can be quite challenging. But, I think it’s becoming more and more therapeutic to regularly disconnect and get back to “analogue” activities like making handmade projects, setting up/decorating our our own creative spaces, curling up with a good book, or simply hanging out and catching up with friends face-to-face (instead of chatting away online).

I pledge to shoot at least two rolls with each film camera that I own.

I caught Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) pretty early in my analogue “career.” As silly as it may sound now, my goal back then was to be able to shoot with a different camera everyday for a month (which means around 30 cameras — so ambitious, I know!). I ended my first year shooting film with 5 cameras, and I soon started acquiring at least two cameras per year. I now have almost half of the ambitious number of cameras I wanted back then, but I must admit that I now only shoot with five of them. Therefore, I think it’s about time for me to start giving my other cameras some love as well.

I promise to save up for a nice TLR camera.

I’ve been meaning to save for a twin-lens reflex camera like the Lubitel 166+ and Yashica Mat 124G (or even a Rolleiflex, but that would be pushing it). This year would probably be a good time to get started with it, and who knows, I might start the coming year with a new-old twin-lensed beauty!

Playing with shaped bokeh is perhaps the most experimental I’ve ever gotten. I’m a poor excuse of a lomographer, I know.

I pledge to experiment, experiment, experiment.

Through the years of shooting film, I guess I have more or less nailed the basics of getting properly exposed photos, but if you browse through my albums, I think you’ll agree that I have hardly been experimental. It’s about time for me to start getting a bit more adventurous with my shots and projects, even if it means risking wasting a roll or two (or more)!

I promise to do my very best to cross-out everything on my analogue bucket list.

My film-fueled bucket list is more or less an extension of my analogue resolutions, and I guess they’re a bit ambitious, but I am determined to do my best to achieve majority of them.

Some of the books gathering dust on my desk. Believe it or not, I’ve only read three of the books in these stacks.

This year, I pledge to read as many books as I get to buy.

I have this bad habit of buying/hoarding more books than I can actually read. Last year, my new acquisitions vastly outnumbered the books that I read and finished, so it’s about time to reverse the numbers. To motivate myself and keep my to-read list from getting so long, I plan to only buy a book for every book that I finish. I really wish my hoarder self good luck.

What do you pledge and promise for a more analogue-filled life this year? Come on, share it with us here in the community!

My Week In Film: December 1st-7th, 2014

December brings with it Winter, the end of the year and the last chances to get those photographs taken that you wanted to do the rest of the year. I decided to kick off December with a slew of photography adventures and a few camera purchases.
