Vintage Portraits of Photographer Leslie Jones and His Cameras

1

Every wondered about a day in the life of a photographer from the early 20th century? Let these old photographs featuring renowned American "camera man" Leslie Jones show you how things used to be!

Boston-native Leslie Jones was famous for having worked for the Boston Herald-Traveler newspaper between 1917 and 1956. Although he had long been interested in the craft, his initial job was being a pattern-maker in a factory. Before finally landing the photographer post for the newspaper, he worked as a freelancer while still keeping his original job. However, what used to be his side job eventually became his full-time profession after losing two of his fingers while at work in the factory.

Now, these photographs came from the collection of the Boston Public Library. In the early ‘70s, the Jones family gave reportedly close to 40,000 negatives from the collection of the photographer’s negatives. Below are but a few of these, showing Jones as he goes in search of his subjects, all the while lugging around his bulky, box-type cameras!

In his 39 years at the newspaper, Jones covered everything from a fox stuck in a tree on the Boston Common, to Charles Lindbergh’s U.S. tour after the aviator crossed the Atlantic. His photographs document both the usual and the unusual in the daily life of Boston and its surrounding regions. – Leslie Jones: The Camera Man

Talented man, wonderful old (now) cameras. I like no. 5 where he's laying with a bunch of booze bottles. Camera is still OK though.

Fresh from My Darkroom: The First Game of the New Rugby Season

Last Sunday, the local rugby team Rugby Como played the first match of the 2014-1025 season. Rugby is my favorite sport to photograph, and for some years I've been documenting almost every home match of this young team. This time I used a 1959 Zorki 5 camera with a vintage 1958 Industar-50 lens loaded with a timeless film, the Ilford HP5+ developed in a century-old developer, the mythical Rodinal. Take a look after the jump!

Geoffrey Berliner On Photographic Processes, Old and New

Geoffrey Berliner is the Executive Director of the Penumbra Foundation and the Center for Alternative Photography in New York. As the head of an organization whose goals are 'to be a comprehensive resource for photographers at any level' and 'to continue to publicize the impact photography has had and continues to have on culture, history and the arts,' his exposure to photographic materials -from 19th century gems to modern equipment- is so extensive, one cannot even begin to fathom just how much knowledge and experience this man has acquired. His collection of over 2000 vintage Petzval lenses is unparalleled, and the object of envy of both traditional and contemporary photographers. Although such lenses are reputed to require a certain level of skill to be used, Berliner seems to manage them with so much ease, producing splendid results.
