Simple and unapologetic is the way to go when talking about the music by Colorado based band, The Lumineers. Catch their no-fuss music in today’s music playlist.
Familiarity is the word I was trying to look for when I first heard the music of The Lumineers. There’s something familiar with their songs even though I had just heard them for the first time. Maybe it’s the strumming of the guitar that gives out mellow twangs and loud screeches at times or the blending of the cello and the percussions. I can’t seem to put my finger on it.
The Lumineers are made up of vocalist Wesley Schultz who also plays guitar, Jeremiah Fraites on percussions and Neyla Pekarek on cello, piano and mandolin. What makes music by The Lumineers such a familiar sound without having the all-too-popular feel to them is probably the lyrics that make every song personal with every listen.
It’s not just the country sound or the Americana-inspired rhythm of the songs but the lyrics themselves that make you want to play the tracks on loop. A particular snippet from the song “Stubborn Love” is an example of this:
It’s better to feel pain, than nothing at all
The opposite of love’s indifference
So pay attention now, I’m standing on your porch screaming out
And I won’t leave until you come downstairs
I’m sure that you’ll be bobbing your heads and be subtly stomping in your seats while you give these few tracks a try. “Ho Hey” is like an anthem on its own.
