If you're itching to fly away somewhere sunny for a beach holiday this wintry season, the beautiful works of a New York City-based painter will make you ache for that tranquil feeling of being under and over water.
Inspired by her childhood memories of summers spent swimming in the lakes of northern Minnesota, Brooklyn-based painter Samantha French uses brush strokes and oil paint to create images of people swimming underwater or lounging by the pool. While not hyperrealistic, her paintings certainly evoke the nostalgic and relaxing feeling of beach vacations and poolside parties. One may even find himself or herself holding his or her breath while looking at the underwater images!
On her work, the artist says:
“These paintings are a link to my home and continual search for the feeling of the sun on my face and warm summer days at the lake. They are my escape, a subtle reprieve from the day-to-day. At the same time, I am drawn to an idealistic time before my own, where swim caps and wool swimsuits were commonplace. This combination of memory, observation and photography has allowed me to preserve the transitory qualities of water and remembrance.”
