With “Re- imaging a conflict”, the photographer Janire Najera presents a series of Holga double exposure images which document past and present, conflict and peace time in Northern Ireland.

“As an outsider, I’ve been amazed by the powerful imagery emanating from the conflict in Northern Ireland that is still on display in the streets. I’ve been intrigued by the effects it generates in society, and to try to represent my curiosities. I’ve been using double exposure to merge these iconic symbols with people from the neighbourhood where they are displayed.

The strategy of double exposing an icon, mural, fence, or wall with portraits of passer-byes without being sure how they will combine together in a single image has been important in achieving the particular effect of this body of work. I was trying to investigate the double dimension that characterises the Northern Irish conflict, inviting the audience to think about other dualities generated by human nature itself or through the influence of memory in the understanding of the present. After this exercise in merging past and present, conflict and peace time, I have explored how other architectural icons latent in Belfast and Derry are still telling stories subtlety about former and potential conflicts."
