Lomographers Around the World. Oaxaca with Makny

What better travel guide than a local friend to get to know a city?! Today makny shares with us the best tips ever so that we can make the most of our next visit to Oaxaca.

We don’t want to sound hackneyed but… the touristic must-do in Oaxaca is:

Oaxaca is a wonderful colonial city. A walk through the city center and its main square is a must. However, there are two tours one can’t miss. The first one would be around the archaeological sites of Monte Albán and Atzompa, two amazing Prehispanic settlements. The latter has just been opened to the public and it’s mind-blowing.

The second tour would be through Mitla, another archaeological site. Mitla, which means the place of the dead, is really important to me, because here one can feel the secrecy behind religion: a church was built on the very top of the pyramid. On top of that, its walls were etched with amazing grecas. One hour’s walking distance away from here, there is a magical place that no one should miss, under no circumstance. Hierve el Agua, on the top of a mountain, was created by various water springs, whose water is extremely rich in minerals and which have turned into spectacular waterfalls over-saturated with minerals.

Once this done, what museum, gallery or cultural center should we visit?

The Centro Fotográfico Manuel Álvarez Bravo always has nice exhibitions, apart from organizing interesting workshops. Plus, the place is just beautiful.

In which area/neighborhood/streets can we enjoy a lovely Lomo-walk?

The city center and, of course, the markets, where you should try agua fresca.

We love food tourism! We can’t leave without having tried…? Where?

Oow, this is the best of this city… It undoubtedly is what I miss the most. Its gastronomy is super rich and for all tastes. We have mole (in 7 different colours), which is a sauce made of an awesome mix of ingredients, so its flavour has loads of different nuances. The cheese, which is called “cheese of Oaxaca” in the rest of the country. However, to be one of us, you have to call it “quesillo”. It’s a very special cheese, since it’s a rolled-up ball of cheese. Delicious. Perfect for pumpkin flower quesadillas. And well, the nopales (cactus) salad with pico de gallo (tomato, onion and chili sauce).

And if we get on the party mood, where should we go?

After having eaten all the above, the best option is to have a mezcal, the local liquor made from the maguey plant. It’s super strong, but the best for the digestion. Actually, we have a (very true) saying: “Para todo mal, mezcal y para todo bien, también”, which means something like “For the bad, mezcal, and for the good too”.

Any souvenir worth putting in the suitcase?

Any handcraft, from the amazing Alebrijes to the rebosos or hupiles (typical clothing).

Your favorite spot in Oaxaca is…

The Centro de las Artes de San Agustín, in a small village 15 minutes away from the capital, where workshops for all graphic arts are organised. It’s an old textile factory. The perfect location for your Lomos.

Which photo do we have to take to be able to say we’ve been to Oaxaca?

I reckon one of the facade of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

Thanks a lot to makny! We are looking forward to visiting Oaxaca soon!
