Making Memories in Film: The Firsts in My Life That I'll Remember Forever

2

The first time for anything will always be an exciting moment.

Ever since I bought my first two Lomo cameras, the Holga 135BC & the Fisheye 2, in May 2008, I’ve made it a point to always capture the important moments of my life in film.

The first time I watched my favorite Scottish pop band Camera Obscura in my hometown, Bandung, Indonesia was on March 20, 2010. All of my photos of the stage were awful because I used a short zoom Fisheye 2, plus the barrier did not allow me to get as close to them as possible. But I never gave up. After waiting for an hour with hundreds of other fans who wanted to take a photo with their idol, this is perhaps the best shot that I have from my first Camera Obscura gig. I hope they will come to Bandung again soon.

Elvo was my best friend back in my dark college days between 2002 and 2007. He was always there when I needed help. I’m the only college friend of his who attended his wedding in Cirebon, Jawa Barat (West Java) on November 11, 2011. That had been my first time using my dear Erika (the name of my Horizon Perfekt camera), and at a precious moment like this. And I’m glad with the result.

I was very enthusiastic when my dad asked me to visit his father’s hometown in Parigi, Pangandaran, Jawa Barat. I’ve never met my paternal grandfather because he passed away when my dad was in elementary school. Parigi is the most famous beach destination for us Bandungnese because we are beach lovers. Unfortunately, we don’t have a beach in our town since it is located below a mountain.

And of course, there’s the event that all of us here at Lomography wants to join – the Lomowalk. This was my first (and fun!) Lomowalk that happened on Saturday, March 31, 2012 with Marko, Adi, Apaw, Bram, Zeka, and Ridwan

Actually, before I bought my first Lomo camera, I already have an analogue camera (Nikon F55D) that I used when I was in college studying Journalism. This was my first stage photo which featured Boys Are Toys, an amazing girl punk band which sadly had split up long time ago. This shot was taken at Gasibu, Bandung in 2005.

Even though I haven’t met and known all of the old members of Lomonesia Bandung yet, I have already become more active in this community. When we manned the booth at some event for college students at Monumen Perjuangan Jawa Barat, I and Erik, Ulfa, Itow, Oki, @zekalinova">Zeka, Ridwan, Ghitsa, @zekalinova">Zeka, Ridwan, Yoga, Zeka, Ridwan, Arief, Ridwan, Otan, and Ridwan built the Lomowall from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. When the event started the next day, Bebop, Zeka, Ridwan, Opik, and Ridwan joined us in manning the booth. Unfortunately, the event was ruined by the heavy rain; still, I’m quite happy because it was my first time building a Lomowall together with other great analogue lovers in my hometown.

After watching animal documentaries on TV, I learned that hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa. It has killed more people than AIDS, typhoid fever, or any other dangerous illnesses. When I visited the zoo in my hometown, I saw the hippo that is well-known as a “sleepyhead hippo.” I walked around the zoo from the morning until afternoon to see him wake up. And thank God he woke up and… asked for food? I don’t know because recently, I learned from a TV show that hippos fart with their mouths, seriously.

I always put this photo in every article where it’s suitable: my first (and, unfortunately, last) meeting with legendary Indonesian comedian Kasino from trio Warkop DKI. I met him by chance during my first trip to Bali in 1996. It’s both an unforgettable and sad memory because one year later, he passed away.

Lastly, here’s my first (and hopefully not the last) religious trip to Saudi Arabia where I did the Umroh (short-time Hajj) in March 2013. I had been scared to come to this holy place because I committed so many sins, and a lot of Indonesians believe that sinners will be punished in Saudi Arabia. Actually, Islam prohibits believing in bad luck. But thank God it didn’t happen to me. Wish me luck so I’ll come again to do the Hajj with my future wife, Amin YRA.

Coincidentally, my friend who introduced me to Lomography just bought this same camera for his birthday. My life has changed ever since I had the Fisheye, my first lomographic camera.
