LomoGuru of the Week: Simonesavo

9

If some photographers take great portraits of other people, then this man from Italy sure can take excellent portraits of pets! Well, that's our first impression but there is definitely more to see!

Cats, dogs, random objects and sceneries; that’s what you can see upon visiting his LomoHome. But we had to dig deeper and see how awesome of a Lomographer he is — testing every film camera possible and even trying it out with the analogue movie maker LomoKino! For just a year, he has already created sweet friendship within our Community. Let’s give a toast to this week’s LomoGuru, Simone Savo!

Name: Simone Savo
Lomography Username: simonesavo
Location: Rome, Italy
Number of years as a Lomographer: 5 years
Number of years in the Community: 1 year

Tell us something about yourself… What do you do for a living? What are your main interests?

Hi! My name is Simone, I am 25 years old studying Architecture in Rome, Italy. I have a great passion for photography and I hope that one day, it turns to be my job. For five years I have discovered this wonderful world that is Lomography and I can’t help but take pictures with a toy camera.

Please tell us something about your LomoHome’s name.

My user name is simonesavo, my real name, and I decided to use this name because I also use it on other photo sharing sites. It’s easier to recognize me and add me that way. :) Alternatively [my LomoHome name] could also be “Danny Boy” the Doctor Who sidekick in an episode.

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

There have been many; from doing a film swap with someone you do not know or seeing a person who follows you and appreciates your photos. But what I remember most is my Home Of The Day feature in the international page, the people who appreciate my photos with a “like”, and getting all those compliments that make me happy. :)

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

I have known many friends on Lomography , although I have not yet met all. Though lucadeluca was one of the first people who I’ve met here. He explained to me how the Community works and during our talks, we’ve discovered that we live closely so every now and then we’ll meet. Another person I’ve met was robertoragno. We just met for the first time a few days ago here in Rome.

Some of his film swaps with robertoragno and goonies.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Of course! Unlike how they want us to believe, film is not dead and will never be. I challenge anyone not to remain fascinated in the management of an analog machine; insert the film, ponder every single click, lead to develop the roller and wait anxiously for the negatives. With digital, we have it all at once, eliminating the exciting time!

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

It’s hard to answer this question because every machine I own is my favorite. Each one of them giving me a special effect that makes it unique. Lately, I always use the Lomography Belair X 6-12 Jetsetter — the design is very retro, I love it and the 6×12 format.

Some snaps from his Belair.

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

I like all my photos, but if I [really] have to choose then definitely this:

One of the many photos of my cats. :) I really like the cat’s pose, the detail of the eye, and the warm tone of the picture

Please share a Lomograph you wish you took and explain why.

There are a lot of good Lomographs in the Community but I can not pick one.

His LomoKino film entitled “CATS.”

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

I always advise my friends who have approached the world of photography to take a good analog machine and begin to shoot, shoot, and shoot again. :)

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, what is that and why?

Maledetto Gatto – Lucio Battisti

This song describes my life because my LomoHome is full of pictures of cats , I love this animal and with photography it has become an obsession.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Shoot , shoot, shoot!

A Vintage Gallery of Art School Classes

If formal training alone is not enough to make great art, then being in a room full of like-minded people might be another form of encouragement. To see fellow artists labor over the tiniest detail, to feel the depth of their ambition, to be part of this silent energy—these are priceless perks. The following photographs of University of Art and Design from the 1920s let us sit in on some of these busy classes.

Coloring Outside the Lines with LomoAmigo Tim Kerr

We recently had the great opportunity to interview our latest LomoAmigo, Tim Kerr. While his repertoire stretches back to the late 1970's and includes that of musician, artist, painter, photographer, skater and many other things, he just prefers Tim! We gave him a La Sardina DIY, which he not only added his own style to, but shot some excellent photos with as well. Rife with candid and thoughtful answers, we expect everyone will glean a nugget of wisdom and leave with a smile.

A Salute to the Masters: Judo (A Tribute to Sabine Weiss)

This article is a tribute to the street and humanist photographer Sabine Weiss. Considered a living legend in street photography, she likes to photograph daily lives of people, trying to capture the emotions she recognizes around her. Weiss like to photograph people of all ages but she especially loves to take photos of children, masterfully immortalizing their spontaneous gestures and emotions. For this article, I was inspired by one of her rare sports photos of some children practicing judo. Do you want to know more about this great artist? Well, read on!

    A Compilation of Lomo'Instant Stories

There are many possible reasons for taking pictures. It could be to document an event, to capture breathtaking scenery, to preserve a fond memory, or simply, to have a snapshot of someone close to your heart. Whatever the reason, there's almost always a story behind a picture, no matter how significant or trivial it may be. And for lomographers, nothing beats the feeling of having that story unfold in your hand, in the form of a print.
