The Monkeys Got Away!!! - Wilderness Festival 2013

8

Last month Lomography UK kindly asked me to go to the Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire to take lots of photos for them. Go see what this monkey boy brought back!

I took my duck, he’s called Butch if you didn’t know

The festival is located at Cornbury Park, west Oxfordshire. It was an amazing place made even better by the surprisingly good weather.

If I’m totally honest, I knew very little about the festival beforehand. I’d heard about it once or twice from friends and that it was “family orientated” so I really didn’t know what to expect until I arrived.

There was so much to see and do – Swimming in the lakes, boating, crafts (you could take lessons to make your own sword?!), participate in talks, search for unicorns (I didn’t find any) and most memorable to me, watch one of my all time favourite films under the night sky – Edward Scissorhands.

Another highlight was walking past the Bubble Inc. stand. I was wandering around (I was lost) and I was greeted by a mass of floating bubbles – I was five years old all over again :)

Bubbles!!!!

In another bizarre incident, I got to meet Ruby Wax. I say meet but I was so concerned about fixing one of my cameras that I stupidly walked into the table where she was doing a book signing. I make a fool of myself on a daily basis but that was something else. She just looked at me like “what the hell?!”

People busy signing things

I’m a huge fan of Empire of the Sun so I made sure I caught them and they did not disappoint me one bit. Their performance was flawless. The costumes, dancers and the light show made it one spectacular night.

In total contrast to Empire of the Sun’s all out performance was Martha Wainwright’s super low key offering. With nothing more than a guitar in hand she took to the stage…

I loved her green shirt/jacket thing

She easily won over the crowd with her incredible voice and faultless performance. I was so glad I was there to catch her live and if you’re reading this Martha, I love you! Please come back to the UK soon!!!

I touched the big owl
Coolest tent in the world!
Crazy looking tree

The best thing about festivals is that you get to hear bands/artists that you wouldn’t otherwise. I had stumbled to the main stage wanting to see Tribes but totally missed them and found myself watching these guys instead…

The band was called Melody’s Echo Chamber (as I later found out) and I really liked them, more specifically the lead singer. I think I fell in love the moment I set eyes on her. Yes I know, I’m so romantic :P

Main stage crowds

I must mention that I took my little sister with me too. She’d never been to a festival before as she’s “not the camping, festival going type" (her words not mine), but even she was won over by what she saw. Later, when we were heading home, she told me she really enjoyed it and thanked me for taking her. It was great to hear her say so.

She said hi to an alien

Before I go I’d like to congratulate Wilderness organisers for hosting such an amazing festival. A big thanks to Lomography UK for all the wonderful camera shaped gifts and for giving me the opportunity to document my experiences on film. I’d also like to thank Ferren over at Lomography UK for being so patient and helpful with all the messages I sent her way. I’m sorry and I can’t thank you enough! Thanks!

Crazy legs

Anyway, that’s it from me. Please check out all my shots from the festival here , here and here but feel free to check out my other shots on my Lomohome too :)

Thanks for reading and hopefully we’ll see you again next year. Monkey out!
