The Aviary (Seattle, Washington)

The Aviary is a creativity store, founded to enable encourage and inspire personal creative expression. The Lomography product line is a perfect fit for this mission as it encourages the capturing of life experience and visceral artistic expression.

Meet Ken Mitchell, the Owner/Founder of The Aviary!

Which one is your favourite Lomography camera and why?

While I sell all models of Lomography cameras, my favorite is the La Sardina. It was the camera that I used when I went to the Amsterdam Lomography store and did my first test roll. I still have the images from that roll at my store and use it to explain how simple the camera operates and yet how impressive the images it produces can be. Customers love its ability to shoot multiple exposures.

What’s the weirdest Lomographic moment you’ve ever had?

The funniest Lomography moment was when I was shooting a farmers market with the Fisheye 2. I was trying to shoot a dog, the owner of the puppy just grabbed the camera out of my hand and started shooting the dog herself, I loved how comfortable people are with and around these plastic cameras.

What is the nerdiest question you’ve ever been asked in your shop?

The most asked question is “Where can I buy film?” I just point to the film wall, and they say, “Oh, so you sell it?” Perhaps the nerd-ish and most endearing is those many camera purchasers who ask if I would load their first roll of film. I love to do this, as it reminds me just how unique this experience is going to be for them.

Where is the best place to shoot some Lomographic masterpieces in your city/neighborhood?

Where to shoot with Lomography cameras in Seattle? There are so many amazing spots: The Ballard Sunday farmers market is great for people and food shots. There are a variety of street musicians and the produce is always amazing. Of course, the Pike’s Market and Big Wheel are worth a photo adventure. The view of the city from Kerry Park on Queen Anne. Discovery Park to get nature shots while still being in the city. Seattle is surprisingly small and easy to get around, so take your camera and just explore.
