Considering I've just put forward a request to become a regular writer and be accepted, this has to be the worst possible news I could ever hear. I have always tried to be as active as possible and help when others ask me for tips about how I shot things, cameras used etc. Having piggies was a good incentive and a way to help me recuperate money spent on experiments for my articles (films and development cost money too guys). If you've read any of them you know how much effort I put into these things, so please @dermanu don't insult us with statements like that.

I agree with @sirio174 you guys should consult your regular writers/contributors than just drop this bombshell on the community. Leaving us until the 10th to use our piggies is just not right.

@headlock @brommi - I'm in the same boat with you guys, I am so close too and with my new tipsters I thought I'd actually be in reach of owning one, but now I'm just lost...

@bebopbebop - "may be they will announce that 1 piggies = $5" - we can only wish bro :/

  77. lostlittlekid
    lostlittlekid ·

@pan_dre - As @shoujoai just said "writing articles makes no sense when you don't get payed for it... a discount is not the same as a full voucher!" We are so verbal because most of us were playing by the existing rules to suddenly have this sprung on us. 10th? That's less than a week?! Many people may not have the money within this week to buy from lomo or, by the sounds of things, still owed a lot piggies which lomo have not yet given. Has lomo taken this into consideration?

Take a look at the responses above ^ Popular users, active users, competition winners, translators, people who regularly submit articles and upload their photos... they're here voicing their opinions because they're affected, more so hurt, by such a decision. I understand that lomography is a business and needs to make profit but this update has just slapped those of us, who have remained loyal to lomo for years, right in the face.

@dermanu - You are entitled to your opinion but to base your comments on your own personal tastes then say "not-worth-it articles" on such a public forum? How is that not insulting? It is incredibly insulting, not only to me but anyone that has took the time to submit something. I personally hope I don't fall into any of your categories as I value my work first, not your judgement. If in future, I find myself needing any reassurance for my articles and such, I'll be sure to look elsewhere from the rest of the community.

I am so sorry to say that Lomography you are disappointed your supporters, community and people who really love Lomography so much and they work out something for you. It is just like our works doesn't appreciated and we do not get what we worth to get.

To be honest, I does not know what the "power" of piggies at the beginning. At the beginning, I can't find a reason why I have to share photos in Lomography instead of Flickr or blog. That time, I shared photos because of some competitions. Until the day I got my first HOTD and won come rumbles after that. I don't mind you say that I am sharing photos or wrote articles because of piggies. But, I have to admit that piggies is a magical motivation for me to share photos and write articles for Lomography and ONLY for Lomography.

Why I wrote articles for Lomography and ONLY in Lomography? I can write in FB or personal blog with my mother language, Chinese which much easier for me. What for I work hard to extend my piggies? I believe some of the article contributors are same as me, English not in good or excellent level. But we try hard to write something. You never know how much effort they had put behind. Why I did research before submit an article? I studies other published articles to avoid repeating, I did research from many other websites, I planned the stories and try hard to make my articles useful or interesting to reader. I knew I might not an excellent writer but I did try my best and I do really work hard for it. Listen, the reason not only because of earning piggies, BUT because I do really love Lomography. I want to share something to newbie and other. This is one of my way to thank what Lomography had given to me.

  89. yokekei
    yokekei ·

There is an article about "How to earn piggies". Ya, we follow and we earned. But now it seems like just a joke. We are earning "Discount" now.

Lomography, don't forget about your community earn piggies through HOTD, POTD which is as a "reward", we earned piggies through rumbles as a "prize", we earned piggies by writing articles as a "reward". Piggies are "REWARD" and "PRIZE"! Piggies NOT DISCOUNT!! It is really funny if we pay for redeem a reward or we pay for a prize. Lomography, you are fooling us and you really break our heart.

Yes, we love Lomography and wanted to try every cameras or films from Lomography. But, how many persons are affordable for every new try of Lomography products? Thus, we work hard to earn more piggies at least it does really helps us save a lot.

On your business point of view, we are just like a gang of person that always redeem free products with piggies. But, we are Lomography FREE testers, we are Lomography FREE photographers, we are Lomography FREE reviewers. I knew that there is a T&C about Lomography has the right to use our uploaded photos/articles for any promotion or other purpose without notice. But, we does not calculate so much because we are willing to share because we love Lomography. But now, what we get?!

I am so disappointed on this decision made by Lomography & without proper notice, somemore with such short period notice. I might not notice about this if my friend does not inform me. I believe many members who do really work hard to earn piggies do not notice about this as well.

I am deeply demotivated by this news. Sorry!

@yokekei Yes, article costs materlal (film and development), time, study... Lomography don't take into account this. With a minimum cost of 10 euro for a film (when developed at home) Dear Lomography, please take into account this.

@Everyone: We have been giving out more and more piggies over the last years. We have been increasing the payout of piggies by a huge multitude. We want to continue this and also spread the piggies to even more people. To achieve this we have to adapt the rules. Plus we are giving out more discounts which we were also not doing in the past. We have to find a balance between piggies, discounts and special prices for people.
We honor our community and will come up obviously with other ways to additionally thank you for your support. This will be spezial prices in competitions (remember all the trips we give out as prizes? we will of course keep these interesting competitions coming), special film and cameras for testing upfront, cameras for lomoamigos and a lot more.
we know that you are our core and trust us this will be always kept in mind by us.

we will continue to be this one community that constantly runs competitions where you can win great prizes, where you can actually get things like piggies at all and we will continue to try to keep you surprised with new products, new changes to the website and a lot more.

  96. snoop
    snoop ·

and in the past you were exactly able to win 50 piggies for the home of the day and then some piggies for the picture of the day. that was it. and you only could be the home of the day once. So we do want to continue to offer fun ways to use the site and to be able to win piggies and most importantly we want this to be something that is accessible for everyone and not go back to a time, where basically 365 people per year could only get piggies (plus a few ones for special competitions and the picture of the day)

@snoop A bad balance, especially for writers, frequent and regular contributors. Maybe will be better to reduce the piggy amount (example: 3 for a not requested post and 6 for a requested) allowing to use at least 80% of them in an order above 200 euros. This might be a fair compensation for material and time spent. Please do not consider the competitions only.

@snoop but ye are making piggys worthless , with the new rules ye have reduced their value to around 10-20 % off the the order value . just last week ye had 20% codes to use on all orders for the site , why earn or win piggies when u can just wait for the next discount ? and what about people owed piggies and who entered compitions before of these rule changes ?

  100. sandravo
    sandravo ·

@snoop. So you are telling me I have to keep spend my saturday afternoons giving workshops for nothing more than a 20% discount in your shop? Why would I do that if I could just stay at home and use one of the many discount codes and probably score an even bigger discount, like 25 or 30%? Like I said, no more workshops!

@snoop Take into account that many website hosting photography are hosting 95% of digital photos, who have a negligible cost respect to a film photography. @aoifedwyer The value is around 30-20%. As you can combine piggies with the many discount codes that are around you will be able to push it to a 50% off most of the time still.

  105. sirio174
    sirio174 ·

@pan_dre Some items (example belairgon lens) are now out with piggies, and a 50% discount (max) for a regular and frequent contributor is too low. Do you know the cost of tilm and development? buying some cameras and film were only a PARTIAL compensation for the costs, and the old rules allow us to test new cameras or to buy new films, and share the lomolove everywhere. I'll continue to collaborate, but I'm waiting for a new well balanced proposal, maybe taking into account the opinions of yours best contributors. Lomo on!

Meanwhile, please delay the date of Sept 10!

I am agree with @sirio174 @sandravo This new rules make piggies meaningless for who are really put on effort to earn piggies. We are just like playing a role of "part time" / "freelance" writer or contributors. @snoop I am understand that you guys try to work out something to balance it but this seems like an unfair rules for us. As you can see, most of people comment here are active member or article contributors. Again, mostly we earn piggies from competition or articles. We might earn POTD or HOTD if we are lucky selected by Lomography. So, what is the meaning of we earn or we won something which we have to pay it actually? What is the meaning of prize? What is the meaning of earning/reward? And we can't spend piggies as previous which is purchase certain amount thus we can use all our piggies. @snoop Please imagine, let's say you work hard to submit travel articles for a travel agency and you are lucky draw winner and you won competition in their travel photography contest. You can get great prize with free air tickets, 5 stars hotel, meals included... but you can't redeem it unless you bring along your family members and you have to pay all the cost for your family members then only you can enjoy your "prize". Will you happy with it ???

@yokekei - I am in total agreement with you and I think you speak volumes in your post. I have so many articles ready to upload still and I was planning on writing more with my upcoming trip to Hong Kong (I was going to visit all the Lomo stores, camera stores and write about my time there, maybe even promote the community by organising meet ups), but like you I feel demotivated by this announcement.

@rocafish - I'm not sure what it's like in the online shop where you are but the UK shop is always empty. I've been after a Oktomat for almost a year and they're still not in stock! Now I have to spend my piggies on things I already have or don't want?? What logic is this?

@sandravo @aoifeodwyer - You guys hit the nail on the head. Codes we can't use, piggies we can't use... very weird marketing strategy altogether lomo

Also what @headlock said is right. So the winner of the sardina dresses competition has to pay for the prizes they win?? How is that a "prize"? You work on a design, win, only to pay for a prize in the end. Why enter altogether?!

It's so sad to read this. I haven't written so many articles, but giving me piggies really motivated me to write more tipsters. And to think about a new tipster. Now I've read this sad news I'm less motivated to write something new. I like to translate and to write and mostly I can't even spend my piggies because I can't even pay the developing (I can't use my piggies for that, you know). I think you should reconsider this whole thing. This isn't going to help you.
I've read dozens of comments here statin "No more articles", "No more contests", "No more translations" and so on, and I'm personally one of those (even though i'll stil contribute at least for some time.
I'm not saying that when I got free 200$ stuff I made a big deal, but if I ask to my family or my friends, they won't say "You made a great deal without any doubt" because they've seen how much time I spent on those works, time that I could have spent in another way. I think that people who are contributing here with many articles will get a better deal by opening a blog so that they can at least get something from the ads or so. Now it's almost useless to contribute to this blog to get a 30% discount (you see you just gave a 20% discount code for free).
I've always thought this was a great way for Lomography to promote itself, I adviced it myself to many people I know, now I don't think I'm gonna do this again.
I think you are loosing almost all your actual contributors and I hope, for you, that you'll find a new series of contributors which won't know how it was and will be happy to get their 30% off.

This of course isn't a nice move, it goes against all your contributors, Think twice

Okay here's something to think about Lomography. I buy lomo cameras, I spend money on lomo film, develop, scan and upload using my laptop and internet. This all costs money, my money. Lomography then uses my photos to promote their brand and cameras. They make profits. Real money. We as lomographers don't get paid or compensated for any of this. Images are just taken without our permission and to make things worse, we don't even get notified or credited in anyway. I've seen this countless times on Facebook, newsletters etc. and before you say anything, I have read the small print but a little manners wouldn't go amiss.

    thelomographer.com/2013/nl_instant_campaign_kickoff/

^ Check that out Lomography. It's a newsletter/advertisement that was messaged to me not so long ago by a friend. My pictures were featured prominently (pics beside the LC-A+ and Fuji Instax Mini 8) and yes it was disappointing not to be asked permission, but more so that I had to learn from a friend and not you guys. It felt kinda bad at first, then I found it laughable. I've always wanted an Instant back for my L-CA+ or the, then new, Instax Mini 8 but they were always out of stock. Then I find my photos promoting products that I don't even have(??) You could imagine my frustration and this was not an isolated incident.

I'd like to think I made my peace with things like that and I think a lot of others did because we were rewarded/compensated with piggies elsewhere.

Now imagine the entire community reading this announcement. Can you now begin to understand why this is disheartening to hear? You casually say that our piggies are still usable after the cut off date but what this means to most of us still with piggies left to spend is simply - "Your piggies aren't worthless, just worth, less".

I agree that this seems like a move into the wrong direction. There are great writers on this site who keep the community alive and make it worth visiting the magazine on a regular basis. They should be rewarded with something that is actually useful. Even with the the old system it was hard to save any money by spending piggies. Usually they were just enough to match the high prices on lomography with the prices you would get in independent shops.
My propositions to make this move slightly less of a motivation killer:
    1) Extend piggie expiration time drastically to make it easier to collect piggies.
    2) Let us use piggies for the lomolab services to compensate for the high costs of film development.

In my eyes Lomography should have two essential goals: To keep analogue photography alive by making it affordable and available to everyone and to keep the communitiy alive as it is the lomolove spreading heart of the company.

Keeping Piggies worth collecting would be the right way to accomplish both.

Considering how overpriced Lomography gear is, and considering the constant reduction in piggy allowances, also considering that piggies can not be applied for discounted goods, I really doubt that will increase sales. Or contributions. More likely Lomography will die out as a super-expensive elite niche hobby, and, sadly but true, analogue photography will slowly and securely die with it. Let us face it - eventually LSI isn't going to keep analogue alive, it is going to kill it.....

Many years are passed by my first encounter with lomography, was still the XX siecle! a lot of things are happened here along these years, the launch of the new cameras! the great competitions that litterally brings some of us or our pictures around the world. I'll never forget the emotion to discover on Flickr that unknow people posed in front of some of my lomowalls exibited at Trafalguar Square in London (thanx to LSI)! or having hour pictures exibited at the Photokina or the great competition with Absolut! it was really like to be part of a Big Mission and a beautiful game. Along the years I bought several products for me and for a lot of people that aren't signed on the site! and to be Home of the Day or Photo of the Day was a great honour apart the good money received for that. And what about all the beautiful peolple from all over the world encountered on the site and also phisically!? Different times, a decent job that let me "throw away" occasionally some money for strange plastic cameras. But now everithings is changed, not only at Lomography.com but the whole world is changed, I can understand the new Piggies policy becouse is the same all over and Companies are not charitable organizations. I don't wanna be offensive but this situation remind me of the pusher tactics, the first doses are almost free untill you're addicted then you have paid in full. However, I'm still here, the fun to shot analogue is the same (for me), I cheased to partecipate to the competitions or to write anything, I'm not Rich, my current salary is around 200 € per month!! I'm plenty of cameras and films (eBay is always a good place where to make good bussines) I only can say THANX to whoever invented all this. Peace!

well, with this adjustment all the magic is gone. there is no reason to collect piggies anymore since i can spend all of them in order to buy products without paying any money. i don't think that i'll contribute with my translations or with my articles anymore.

@mart and everyone else: it's not that lomography isn't caring about us, it's that we are not caring enough for them. we want more and we want it cheap, but lomography is a company - not made of pure love, but also of money. and you (and I) have to understand this point. it isn't good for me & my pocket, but i sure think it's good for lomography's economy and maybe it's something for staying alive.

A bit upsetting, especially as the link I clicked on when I got the initial announcement didn't seem to say this. Now I've missed by two days. Lovely.
