"Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you have the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train moving while sitting still? Maybe I was just crazy. Maybe it was the 60s. Or maybe I was just a girl... interrupted." -- Susanna from Girl, Interrupted
Girl, Interrupted is a 1999 American drama film that was adapted from a 1993 memoir of the same name by Susanna Kaysen.
Directed by James Mangold, the film stars Winona Ryder as the 18-year-old Kaysen, and Angelina Jolie as Lisa, a diagnosed sociopath who stays at the mental institution where Kaysen is admitted after taking an overdose of aspirin.
I remember watching this when I was younger (I was around 9 when the film first came out) and thought that it was pretty intense. Although, I’ve yet to determine whether it directly or subconsciously influenced my fascination with personality disorders and the like.
It probably did.
