Madonna was recognized more for her music rather than her acting, but there were actually several films that made a mark, perhaps not on the minds of critics, but in the heart of every ardent Madonna fan.
Evita is a film adaptation of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical of the same title. It tells the story of Eva Peron, the second wife of Argentine President Juan Perón. It won five Academy Awards including Best Original Song for You Must Love Me and five Golden Globes including Best Picture and a Best Actress trophy for Madonna.
A League of Their Own
The American comedy-drama is a fictionalized tale of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Here Madonna plays “All the Way” Mae Mordabito. Watch it and learn why she was referred to as such.
The 1990 American action film is based on the 1930’s comic strip character of the same name. Warren Beatty stars in the title role and Madonna is Breathless Mahoney, an entertainer out to steal the heart of the detective. She was successful at this, in real life. Beatty and Madonna became lovers soon enough.
The Next Big Thing
The 2000 comedy-drama didn’t quite make a whiplash at the box office. It wasn’t critically acclaimed, either. But here you see Madonna as less than her usual seductress self, as a straight woman who decides to have a child with her gay best friend. Pretty dry plot, undeniably, but then you’re watching it to see Madonna out of fishnet and glitter, aren’t you?
Who’s That Girl
Another flop at the box office. But here you see Madonna, in a 1987 film, with those eyebrows and that mole, just years after she rose to pop stardom.
Today is Madonna’s birthday! We all know about what a successful recording artist she is, but in comparison, recognition for her acting is very limited. You be the judge. Watch these Madonna-starred movies and see for yourself.
