Sweet, Sweet Switzerland: The Red Colors of Basel

In this article, I present to you some of the artistic and architectural masterpieces of Basel, an important Swiss city situated the north of the country. Its historical center is dominated by the red color of the walls of the buildings, enriched with precious decorations and paintings. Read more!

The city of Basel is located in the north of Switzerland, near the border with Germany and France, and it is crossed by the River Rhine.

The historic city center is quite lively, especially near the Market Square (Marktplatz), where the constant coming and going of people offers some interesting ideas to take pictures!

At the center of this square there is the Town Hall (Rathaus), an architectural masterpiece built in red stone in the XVI century. On its wall, you can find precious decorations and paintings!

In all the historical center prevails the use of red sandstone, which makes it rather uniform and very pleasing to the eye.

Even the ancient cathedral, originally in Romanic style, and characterized by the presence of two irregular towers, is built with this material.

This architectural masterpiece was built between 1019 and 1500, and survived to the massive earthquake of 1356 that destroyed much of the city as well as many castles within a radius of 30 kilometers.

Redesigned in the Gothic style, it is situated in a square of Baroque style. Inside the cathedral (destined for the reformed worship), there is the tomb of Erasmus of Rotterdam.

These photos were taken more than 15 years ago with my faithful Praktica LB. I have recently returned to this beautiful city during some of my bicycle tours, and I must say that I always find it interesting and pleasant to stay!

In the city center, to entertain even the little children, you can find some nice street artists!

And in the first half of August, a famous swim takes place every year in the Rhine, attended by thousands of people! This year the event will take place on the 13th of the month!

    Outstanding article and pictures! I lived in Basel in 1989, however, with your pictures I have seen more than what I did see in my two months of stay! Of note is the Theatre of the Modern Arts with its dancing water fountain! It is a very nice city!
