Picture This: Happiness is Searching for Bugs

1

Read about my daughter Verona who searches for lady bugs in my parent's backyard in Kansas last spring.

I rarely see my kids happier when they are deeply engrossed a project of their own design, most of which occur outdoors. Similarly, few things make me happier than watching them do it.

Last spring there was a lady bug nest somewhere in my parent’s yard around my old club house. My daughter had been outside on the swings with her grandma when we realized the insane over abundance of lady bugs around us so she abandoned the swing in favor of a tiny cage with twigs and grass in it.

She spent the rest of the afternoon diligently searching every inch of the grass around the club house, squealing with delight every time she spotted one, then trying as many tries as it took to carefully scoop the insect up and gently placing it in the cage. Her baby brother joined her occasionally for a few minutes at a time but I don’t think I’d ever seen her as focused as she was on that.

The sunshine was gorgeous that day and I couldn’t help but bring out several of the analog I’d brought along to take advantage of the moment. These pictures remind me of how happy that afternoon was every time I look at them.
