Singapore Cafe-Concepts: Artistry

Nestled in a quiet corner of the Kampong Glam heritage district, Artistry is a new art gallery and café in a shophouse dedicated to art – in every sense of the word.

As its name suggests, the space and concept are all about creativity and mastery of craft, with a nod to the quaint and quirky. At Artistry, emerging artists – both local and international – now have a platform for their debut exhibitions, performances, talks and events in an intimate and inviting space. The hybrid gallery and café serves up locally roasted Liberty Coffee and lovingly made artisan desserts, served on beautifully hand-crafted pottery. Artistry is a refreshing addition to Singapore’s burgeoning creative community, creating a comfortable space to reflect, engage and share ideas.

The Concept
The cool thing about Artistry is that the café is the gallery and the gallery is the café. Inviting, and intimate with a casual vibe, it’s the perfect space to appreciate art – whether it’s a painting, photograph or installation piece, or interpretive dance set to lyrical passages. Artistry is a space for art practitioners and patrons to engage, connect or perhaps even collaborate – over a great cup of coffee and delicious dessert. In 2013, Artistry will host Singer-Songwriter and Open Mic nights to provide an intimate platform to local musicians.

The Look
The space is characterised by a communal table and furnishings custom-made from wood salvaged from the now defunct Malay Village at Geylang Serai. Developed in collaboration with design collective Chemistry, the striking table and the outdoor deck crafted from the Chengai wood resemble funky piano keys. Vintage aluminum chairs sourced from a Penang clan association complete the rustic-industrial look of the cafe. Staying true to supporting local crafts, Artistry commissioned local potter Todd Tok to create unique dessert plates and cappuccino mugs that were fired at the dragon kiln in Jalan Bahar.

The Grub
Artistry offers a tempting array of desserts and beverages, best appreciated together with the art hanging on the walls. The highlight on the drinks menu is the locally roasted Speakeasy blend from Liberty Coffee, which is an aromatic mix of Brazilian and Guatemalan beans. This speciality blend boasts a medium body with predominant cocoa and nutty tones. Artistry offers artisanal cakes, such as the traditional sugee cake, the moist walnut & carrot cake and the popular chocolate and banana cake. Many satisfied patrons have also commented that Artistry’s signature Red Velvet cake is the best version that they have tried. Customers can also indulge in draft beer from a family owned craft brewery in the Swiss Alps. In mid-2013, Artistry will offer a more extensive lunch and dinner menu, including dips inspired by the owners’ global travels.

A Salute to the Masters: Ducks (A Tribute to Henri Cartier-Bresson)

This article is dedicated to arguably one of the most famous street photographers in the world, Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004). On this occasion, I felt obliged to write a tribute to this great artist whom I consider the "Mozart of Photography." His photos are inimitable, and to try to reproduce his innate sense of composition, harmony, and choice of the right moment is but an illusion. So I chose an unusual way to pay tribute, the only way possible for me. Take a look!

So, it's time to take off your socks and shoes and relax barefoot! Where? Of course, on the walls surrounding the beautiful lake! Take a look!

Fresh from My Darkroom: The Secular Fair in Alzate Brianza

Every year in the beginning of September, a small Italian town situated a few miles from my city of Como hosts an ancient fair dedicated to the Virgin Mary: the Fair of Our Lady of Rogoredo. This series of images fresh from my darkroom was taken using a roll of HP5+ film loaded inside my wonderful Horizon Perfekt.
