Kamenjak is a peninsula just a couple kilometers southern of Pula, the largest city (and most famous one) in Istria, Croatia.
Kamenjak is around 10 km long and around 1 km wide. It’s divided into two parts: upper and lower Kamenjak. The upper side is populated, with its biggest city being Premantura, but what makes this peninsula special is it’s lower region.
The lower part of Kamenjak was legally made into a National Park in 1966. It is not populated and it is considered as a little oasis of nature in the midst of all civilization. Here, the roads are not paved, there is wilderness all around you — it’s almost magical, as if you went back in time.
When you drive to the entrance of park, there is a gate which looks like an entrance to an entirely different country. If you enter on foot or with a bike, it’s free, but if you want to enter with a car, you have to pay 5 euros.
The most gorgeous thing about Kamenjak are its bays. You can just go off the main road and find a little piece of coastline for yourself. There are some bays that are really popular and can get quite crowded during the day (like Pinizule, Polje, Njive) but you can always explore and find a secluded part just for yourself, it’s that simple. And the water… the water around Kamenjak is gorgeous. Nowhere in the Adriatic have I seen water so beautiful, it’s almost turquoise.
There are a couple of bars on Kamenjak, the most famous one is Safari Bar, which is decorated as a bar in the middle of, well, safari. It’s quite fantastic. If you are brave enough, you can go jump off cliffs near the bar.
You can also participate in other activities. The eastern part of peninsula can get windy and it’s perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Around the peninsula, there are some islands. They look close, but don’t try to swim towards them because sea currents around them can get quite fierce. One of the islands is called Figoliga and it is famous for a its site where dinosaur footprints were found. This is why there is dinosaur park in Kamenjak, it’s especially liked by children.
There are a lot of reasons to come and visit Kamenja,k but if you want solitude I would recommend coming in late September.
