What is a better way to introduce the playful and experimental style of Lomography than an easy to use Supersampler!
I was more of a digital photographer a year ago, being so used to the instant playback on my Nikon and the money I saved from not using film; I had forgotten how great analogue photography was. And when my boyfriend decided to purchase the Supersampler for me as a Valentine’s Day Present, I was reluctant. There I was, holding on to a light plastic funny looking camera and had no clue how it worked and what it was suppose to do. However, after being directed to its microsite, I was in love.
The Supersampler is a 2.5″ × 1.25″ × 4″ plastic camera that has 4 panoramic 20mm plastic lenses that captures 4 shots into one frame. It uses 35mm film and preferably a VERY high ASA/ISO film due to the lack of a flash or a hotshoe. I have attempted to try using a low ISO film and have been great disappointed with the images. However, paired with the Lomography Color Negative 800ASA film, the outcome is amazing. The blue sky is extra blue and the greenery is extra green (in my opinion anyways)!!
The reason, when I asked my other half, on why he decided to buy me this camera was simply because he thought I took photography too seriously (in other words, he thinks my photos are boring). He thought that by introducing a light plastic camera, I would have more fun and take more entertaining pictures. And he was RIGHT (although I would never admit it to him). There are so many ways that you can use this camera! You could get the subject to move or you can move the camera sideways, vertically or even throw it in the air. It can provide the camera holder plenty of amusement when your subject has to jump, dance, spin, run, crawl, and pull faces when requested to (not at the same time, but I will try that someday!). However, due to the reluctance of my friends, I generally take photos of scenery more than people.
I would recommend this camera to new Lomographers as it’s so simple to use and so much fun. It gave me a new view on photography and I have been having fun ever since! This camera is surely a great way to inject excitement into everyday photography. I hope you guys will enjoy it as much as I do!
