Curious to who holds the Lomography fort over in Berlin? It's time for the community to meet and greet Melanie!

Have you always wondered who was that kind Lomographer who helped you out when you were in a jam in Berlin? Well, our Monthly Gallery Store Insights sets its sights to Germany as we ask Melanie or as some of you might know, graefin, a few questions!

Describe the Berlin shop in 5 words.

Colourful, friendly, large, the place to be and cozy

How did you get to start working for Lomography?

I am a Lomographic community member since 2003 and worked for Lomography at the Photokina 2008. Obviously the HQ liked what I was doing there and asked me in spring 2009 if I wanted to work for them. Because I was desperately looking for a job and couldn’t find one where I lived I took the chance.

What’s your favorite Lomo camera and why?

The LOMO LC-A because it’s handy and very easy to use. It just makes great pictures every time I use it. AND: Lubitel. I just loooove medium format and I always have the Lubitel (and the LC-A) with me.

How is the analogue photography scene here?

We see many people with cameras around their necks coming into the store. Some of them digital but most of them analogue. There are a lot of young people that simply love analogue photography. I think the scene is growing.

What’s in the store’s recurring playlist?

Oh we play Last.fm Radio all the time. Sometimes we use “Arctic monkeys” as a tag, or “groovy” depends on our mood. And because the people working in the store are music nerds they now play artists I’ve never heard of and when they put those into the Last.fm Radio we have a nice mixture of electronic-pop-groovy-retro-beats.

What’s the weirdest/most interesting experience you’ve had so far while in the shop?

The weirdest experience was when a guy came in wearing something that looked like a dress from Lappland. He told us that he was on a freedom walk for more than 20 years now and that we should support him with some money which he would use for himself (not for freedom…). And I told him: sorry we can’t give you the money. And he went out cursing and spitting on the floor outside.

And there are many people coming in that want to have pictures taken for a passport. We already decided to sell the next one who comes in with this inquiry an Actionsampler Flash because you get 4 pictures on one print. We would then call the camera: Passfoto-Maschine.

For a tourist in Berlin who’ll only stay for a day, what would you suggest for them to do and visit?

Definitely go to the Reichstag at night. You can go to the top and have a wonderful view across the city! Beautiful! Or climb the Siegessäule – also a wonderful view.

For you, what is Berlin’s best kept secret?

The real “Berliner”. Where are they?

Do you have any future or planned collaborations with other artists and outfits in mind?

We want to do some cool partyies at the store and have already made contact with some very cool DJ’s. Let’s see what happens.

What are the upcoming events that the Berlin store has for its loyal customers?

There will be the Bread & Butter party next week. On the 20th and on the 21st we will serve you the original Berlin Currywurst and make you dance to some good music played by DJ Heimlich Knüller. Besides there are always great workshops at the weekends: n the 23rd we have one about Film and on the 30th there is one about our lovely Lady Diana F+.

    A real Berliner is not from Berlin, they all moved to this city from outside. Only a hand full were really born in Berlin. So you are a real Berliner, too. ;)
    You have to look around "Warschauer Straße" to meet cool people. Go to East-Berlin and don't stay in Berlin-Mitte. It's too boring there... :D
    But greafin I really like you and your work! I think we'll meet us in a few weeks again.
