The Lomo LCA + or the Lomographic Dream

8

The Lomo LC-A + is the camera of all dreams. An artistic ally, an extension of the arm, a link between a dreamer's brain and a hand which seeks to transcribe a dreamlike vision ...

My artistic ally is the LC-A+ Russia Day. He accompanies me everywhere, in all situations. He is in a special place that has no other camera I own. This allows a continuous and endless dream.

L’automne – Fuji Pro 400H

He is the best, which transcribes what I feel or what I want to show in my work . This is certainly due to its Minitar 1 lens. Indeed, the LC-A + produces a marked contrast, very bright and highly saturated colors. A tool that allows a surreal journey.

I tell you it is the one for all daydreams! He is the companion of my urban ballads when I try to turn things around me in dream countries. This exercise is much easier to achieve with this type of camera, with its possibility of double direct exposure and automatic exposure calculation. However, it takes practice and the development of an unconscious and automatic production technique.

For me, the LC-A + acts as a prosthesis, a kind of continuity or extension of my brain through the hand and the eye and take one more tool status. Somehow, the camera replaces the organic things, which is why it takes the prosthetic status.
It is as prosthetic can be as a musical instrument is for a musician. An extension of the body, a second entity because the man with the camera is a photographer.

The LC-A + is the tool of daydreaming, the color saturation can make the unreal world turn through the double exposure. In a sense, the photos taken with LC-A + allow a loss of reference to reality. Obviously, our critics say it is possible to do the same with digital tools, but the LC-A + render is so special, trying to copy it causes only a blatant deception.
I especially think of a poster I saw recently for the Festival of Fashion Photography from Hyères.

Indeed, aesthetics and technique of LC-A + are inimitable. They are the essence of the Lomographic movement. Because in our societies, it offers an alternative.

Wonderful article and gallery!! I have an original, Russian LCA, that I use regularly. The Russian lens is better than the Chinese one, with a bit less vignette, slightly less red over saturation, and sharper, particularly at the center. Also, the Russian camera has 1st and 2nd curtain sync for flash, but no double exposure provision.

Argus Paul Estabrook's Surreal Work in Paper Cutting

The characters in Argus Paul Estabrook's work in paper cutting are the stuff nightmares are made of: unusual forms, jagged edges, arms outstretched as if seeking salvation—all emphasized further by the plain white background on which they are placed. Combined, these details paint a picture straight out of Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy."

    Vintage Gallery: Hand-Painted Postcards

Humans always seek ways to improve an innovation. In the early days of photography, the project was to introduce color to Mr. Daguerre’s fascinating prints. Transferring reality onto wood or paper was one thing; it was another to produce a vibrant equivalent. Hand painting was an answer to this public demand for color before color photography was even invented.

Film Artist and Light Show Host Julian Hand

Julian Hand is a film artist and visual projectionist for our latest LomoAmigos The Oscillation. He uses traditional analogue techniques to create swirling, trippy and beautifully tactile films and light shows. He uses Super 8 film, coloured inks, washing up liquid, soap and acetate to create these images and visuals. He embraces all things analogue! I brought an LC-A+, some 1600 ISO film and captured him at work.
