Being a Lomo Dad!

The event that changed my life the most was when I became a dad for the first time. Loving and bringing up that little part of yourself that make you smile a thousand times, and why not, making him the perfect partner for any adventure, even the analog one.

I love being a dad. It’s the best thing that has happened to me by far. As some of you may know, I portrait the way I see paternity through analog photography. My first son is the main subject of many of my pictures, articles and my regular companion in lomowalks. He knows about lomography and it doesn’t surprise him to see analog cameras and films of any kind everywhere around our home. He joins me when I take films to developing. He even loves scanning the pictures afterwards!

This of being a lomodad, has led my son to take pictures since he was very little. When he was two I gave him an old, non-working, polaroid and soon after he had already taken possession of one of my first Holgas – which was broken too. However, with time he has learned to take pictures and advance the film. He specially likes the Sprocket Rocket Superpop Orange, one of my most beloved cameras. I believe he is charmed by its shape and its bright orange color – which is his favorite. Well, he even thinks this and the colorsplash, are his.

I say my first son, because in around a month I’m going to be a father again. Obviously, I have captured the whole process again though the lenses of my cameras.

Recently, as a gift for Mother’s day, me and my son took pictures of my pregnant wife. My son was so happy! and this time I lent him my orange sprocket rocket and let him use a whole film. The idea was taking pictures of his mother and his soon-to-be brother.

I gave him some indications: do not move the lever to bulb (B), taught him to take double exposures, to keep his fingers away from the lenses, and do not move focus… etc. This was a true challenge since my son had mostly used automatic cameras!

Pictures were good, for a first time. Some difficulties with taking pictures against the light. He even took pictures of us by surprise! I have to say I realized I had to bring him into lomocomunity as I saw how much fun he had. I think he will become a great lomographer. He loves analog and he comes up with the strangest ideas, very creative.

What better way to enjoy parenthood? I share all my hobbies and pastimes with him. We have such a great time. Best part is when he asks: daddy, when are we going to take pictures next Saturday? :D Lomography is he perfect thing to share, then, what better than sharing it with your loved ones!

Being a lomodad is the best! Greetings to all lomodads, lomosons, lomodaughters and lomogranddads of this community!

A Salute to the Masters: Buraco (A Tribute to Alfred Eisenstaedt)

Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of Life Magazine's greatest photographers, known for his ability to immortalize the storytelling moment of many public events in history. To write this tribute to him, I chose a subject that he photographed in different places and times: card players in public places. The photos in this article were taken at the Patronal Feast of my city Como, during a series of buraco's lessons held by a local card players club.

The Magic Yet To Come: Part 1

Here’s a random and rather mysterious tale for you folks. Just the other day, I was at a local bar with a few friends. It was much like any other evening; we were sipping a couple of cocktails, recounting our adventures, falling over ourselves with laughter and half-drunkenly meditating on the meaning of life (a scientist once told me it’s 42 by the way). But then something truly strange happened. Read on to hear my story and please make a comment with your guess at the end!
