Today in History (1972) David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust Album is released

David Bowie glams it up and releases an album.

Imagine that the world is bound to end in five years, and then comes some bizarre creature from outer space to save us all. Hello, Ziggy Stardust.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a concept album by legendary English musician and actor David Bowie. The album is often referred to ‘simply as ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and is based on a fictional character of the same name. On this same day in 1972, the album was released.

Ziggy Stardust is David Bowie’s iconic rock star alter-ego. Ziggy is glamorous, androgynous, sexually promiscuous, and well, is into drugs, but he’s also a musically gifted extra-terrestrial with a mission to promote peace, love and humanity. He sports flaming orange hair and he has a sun (or was that a planet?) painted on his forehead, or sometimes a lightning symbol painted across his face. His wardrobe consists mainly of out-of-this-world spandex or metallic outfits in geometric prints.

Can’t quite get how he looks like? Here are some photos of Ziggy himself!

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars contains 11 glam rock-infused tracks, including the title track Ziggy Stardust. The album is filled with societal observations and sexually explorative innuendoes. It is regarded as one of the greatest albums ever produced and Bowie’s most memorable creation so far.

Here is a video clip from a show that was held just weeks after the album was released:

“Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with weird and gilly
And the spiders from mars. he played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy’s band”
