When you need a break from the city, a lake nearby is always a good choice. Lake Jarun is not even that far from the city center and it is easily reached with public transportation.
Lake Jarun is a lake situated in the biggest city of Croatia and its capital Zagreb. Jarun is actually a city district and that is where the lake got its name from. It’s a nice neighbourhood, a quiet sleeping suburb where also some shopping malls can be found and where there is a newly built sports hall Arena which is quite stunning.
Lake Jarun is a city lake, but that doesn’t mean it’s polluted. It’s actually quite clean and every summer, the beaches around it are full of people. I actually don’t like to swim in lakes that much, but this one is one of my favourites to swim in. It just doesn’t feel like a lake and it doesn’t even smell like it. There is actually just one part of the lake meant for swimming. The other, bigger part is a rowing training ground. In that part, the lake is more than 2 km long and you can see rowers practising there all day long. Each year there is also a world cup match there.
There is a road that leads around the lake which is around 6 km long. The surroundings are really beautiful and that is why this path is really popular for running, biking, roller skating, etc. The lake also has 6 islands and you can go to some of them by bridge, the others you can swim to. The nicest is the one in the swimming area that is called the Island of Love and it is in the shape of a heart. Yeah, really.
Jarun is also quite known for its night life. Around the lake, there are many night clubs and bars and the area feels really alive at weekends. If you like something different and live music is more your thing, you definitely have to visit Jarun in the time of Inmusic Festival which is one of the best music festivals in Europe. It happens in June and it is absolutely amazing. It is happening on the Island of Croatian Youth, the whole scene is really relaxing and every year they manage to get some really big stars. This year there will be Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Iggy, Bloc Party and many more. A lot of reasons to check one of my favorite lakes I have ever been to!
