The Konstruktors: An Interview With Sixsixty

2

Here comes another Konstruktor! We are pleased to introduce you to one of our favorite Lomographers in the community, sixsixty. Check out the Q&A and gallery after the cut!

Full Name: Kawai Carvalho
Lomography Username: Sixsixty
Location: San Francisco, CA

Tell us something about yourself.
I am an avid hobbyist photographer. I just love new cameras and learning all their quirks and qualities. I also love to travel and photograph the world through tiny lenses. The Konstruktor was an amazing companion on my recent adventures.

How did you find your Konstruktor experience?
Amazing. I am a HUGE fan of Waist Level Viewfinders. I love the ability to see exactly what my shot is going to look like and be able to adjust the focus perfectly. The camera is also pretty compact and light, so it’s a great one to just throw in your bag and go! I was thrilled to have this new Lomography wonder as a companion.

What do you like best about the Konstruktor?
Two things! Building a camera yourself is just an amazing way to get to know all the fine details and qualities that will be available to you. There’s just no better way to know how something works, than to build it yourself. Second, like I mentioned before, I am a huge fan of Waist Level Viewfinders. I love seeing the world through that view.

Share a funny or strange story while using/building the Konstruktor the camera.
I just love when people ask about this camera. I’m excited to tell them that new film cameras are still being made today, and the joy of using them has never been better. Then I tell them that this camera comes as a kit and you build it yourself. That seals the deal and hooks another friends as a new analogue photographer.

Any tips for the future Konstruktor user?
I find with most DIY cameras it’s best to roll the film slowly. Be confident but gentle when winding the film and you will get consistent results. Otherwise if you lack the patience you may skip a frame here or there. It’s not the end of the world, but I like to make the most of my film and get every wonderful shot I can.

The Konstruktor is the world’s first Do-It-Yourself 35mm SLR camera. With it, you can easily build your very own camera from scratch. It’s the perfect tool for having fun whilst learning the exciting mechanics behind how analogue photography works. Get yours from the Online Shop or Lomography Gallery Stores Worldwide. Find out more about the camera on the Konstruktor Site.

Derek Woods is an Los Angeles-based photographer who previously got involved in a controversy surrounding a photo that was used in the opening credits of the HBO TV series "True Detective." Coincidentally, Woods happens to be a member of the Lomo community, and it became vital to interview him regarding the issue. The interview was successful and was published in May last year. His current project, 365 of Lomography, will chronicle his day-to-day exploits with Lomography cameras. To jog your memory, and to re-acquaint you with Woods, we are republishing our interview with the controversial photographer. Please take note that some of the photos are NSFW.
