When it comes to summer in Constanta, there are a lot of places to see and things to do; being the biggest seaside city in Romania, with an opening to the Black Sea, Constanta can offer tourists and locals a wide variety of summer hot spots!
One of them is the Dolphinarium, a really cool mini zoo complex where you can find a micro delta, a planetarium, a small marine museum, a bird exhibition and dolphins.
The Dolphinarium is actually only a part of The Natural Sciences Museum of Constanta which also includes the Constanta Aqarium about which you can read here. The Dolphinarium itself, as a complex includes an exotic birds exhibition, a small marine museum, a micro-delta, a planetarium and a dolphinarium.
The dolphinarium began its activity in 1972, on the 1st of June, thus, this year celebrating 41 years of activity. At that time it was the first museum form of its kind from Romania and the SE of Europe. The dolphinarium has 2 structures: two amphitheatres with pools (one indoor and the other outdoor) where the dolphin shows are organised and a small marine exhibition which presents the world of shell fish living in diverse seas.
The exotic birds exhibition was opened in 1982. It is probably the least attractive part of the Dolphinarium as it consists of a small room with bird cages, where you can find mostly sad parrots. As a personal opinion, this exhibition must be closed down or modernised.
The planetarium is the first objective of this type from Romania, being opened in 1969. It is a really neat place which unfortunately can be visited only in larger groups. However, at events such as “The Night of Museums” which take place once a year, it is opened all night.
The micro-delta, which was opened in 1985, is by far the most interesting part of the dolphinarium. It is located on six-hectare surface from which two hectares represent luster water with a swamp reservation. It was created as a small replica of the famous Danube Delta located in north of Dobrogea. Here you can find pelicans, swans, wild geese, peacocks, pheasants, moufflons, deer, horses, goats, rabbits, wild boars, foxes, chicken, polecats and much more. You can also ride horses and have fun in a small petting zoo.
All in all, the Dolphinarium is a really cool place to hang around in the summer, a favourite of the tourists, a great place to take photos and relaxing walks, enjoy nature inside the city and learn more about the world around you.
