The Brilliant Smena Symbol

2

The Smena Symbol is an older camera that packs a punch! With brilliant images that just might surprise you, and a flat and unique look that it gives to your images.

The Smena Symbol is a camera that I had known about for a while, but never really given much thought to, that was until I noticed it for sale in the Lomography Shop. I ordered one, not sure what to expect, and when it arrived, I have to admit I was a little surprised by it. Instead of a brand new camera, it was a refurbished one. For a moment I was confused, but after some quick research I found out that these cameras aren’t even made anymore, therefore it would have to be an older one!

Worries aside, I loaded a roll of film into the camera. The metal around the lens is surprisingly smooth to turn and feels great! I found the controls confusing at first, but after a few shots I had the hang of it. I kept hearing clicking noises, like the film wasn’t fully advancing when I pulled the advancement lever. Guess what, the film wasn’t fully advancing! When I got the shots back I was shocked, but in a good way! The metal on this camera and the somewhat clunky insides, made for some great pictures!

Everyone who sees my shots comment by saying that they look great, have nice color, but something is just a little off. I love that, and they are right. The people look a little flat or something in the images, but it is part of the camera’s charm. I literally never know how something will look with this camera, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

If you have the opportunity to get one of these cameras, don’t hesitate, just get it! The Smena Symbol has become one of my favorite go to cameras because it is fun to use and the results are always awesome!

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. Just pick up some ideas from here, experiment, and scan your negatives with the Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Anything is possible: burning, scratching, putting on hydrochloric acid, balsamic vinegar, nail polish, bleach, or raspberry juice... use your imagination and write down your new film soup recipe!
