When you need a break after long months of work or studying, it's always a good idea to go surfing. Surfing clears your mind, it relaxes your body and soul.
I have been to Zarautz for a couple times now. It’s quite far from Slovenia, where I live, but it’s worth it.
Zarautz is a small town in the northern part of Spain. But don’t tell the locals I told you it’s in Spain, it’s actually a part of Basque country and locals are really proud of their heritage. You can see Basque flags on their windows, every sign is written in two languages and people won’t hesitate to tell you this is not Spain.
Zarautz has a population of around 20,000; it is a nice little town with good atmosphere. But what makes this town awesome is its 2.5km long beautiful beach. It’s home to some of the best Basque and Spanish surfers; there is a world championship in surfing going on each year and also some other smaller venues. Last year I spotted Gabriel Medina in Zarautz, one of the best surfers in the world right now.
But it’s not all about professionals; it’s a long beach and you can always find a place for yourself to learn to surf. You can easily borrow a surfboard in any of the local surfing shops or you can sign up to some surfing school. The waves here are really nice for learning.
But if surfing is not your cup of tea, there are many other activities to do. You can borrow a sup, a longboard or a bicycle. You can catch a train and go to some other beautiful Basque cities — there are direct trains to San Sebastian and Bilbao. You can eat typical Basque food as there are many local restaurants. Or you can just chill on the hillside above Zarautz, goof around or watch the most gorgeous sunset in the world.
