LomoGuru of the Week: Lawypop

Who would have thought that a typo would lead to so many other things? Things like being a passionate Lomographer and being this week's featured LomoGuru!

He wasn’t supposed to be lawypop but destiny dictated otherwise. But hey, destiny did play its game well because that name have made rounds in our Community, making the man behind the lens an awesome Lomographer to befriend! You got it right, lawypop from Singapore is this week’s LomoGuru!

Name: Lawrence Chiam
Lomography Username: lawypop
Location: Singapore
Number of years as a Lomographer: 5
Number of years in the Community: 5

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name…

I was chatting with shareen and told her it was a typing error because I wanted my username to be “lawrypop” (Lawry as in Lawrence and pop as in lollipop) but I was too anxious when signing up and hit the submit button without realizing that it was “lawypop.”

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

It has to be been part of the awesome creative team behind Singapore’s LomoMatrix last year! Getting everyone together from planning to post editing the matrix video was one most memorable one!

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

Honestly, we may not be close friends but I met these wonderful Lomographers around the world as we talked, walked, and shared our Lomo adventures!

In Russia: plavaliznaem, aton. In New York: cc-in-paris, jeabzz. In Malaysia: ripsta, eastmoe, kiddie_carzy, antibiotyx, eva_eva and back home in Singapore: quaisoir, stonerfairy, renaishashin, ndroo, ponzi, scrabbyknees, venusattack, cyanwater, ymmij, norya, ngmail, iantheman, coolsigg, dabai, meerly awesomeesther, kaelcat etc. I hope I didn’t miss anyone out! :)

Familiar? These are just some of Lawrence’s popular Lomographs!

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next five years? Why?

Yes! I thought I will stop taking Lomographs when I got my first Digital SLR a few years ago. But look, I still take Lomographs today! I think it’s really because of who I’m really am – a Lomographer.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

This is tough but I have to say it’s the Horizon Perfekt! He had traveled with me to most of my overseas trips from Bali to Moscow to New York! He was sick and had to go to the camera hosital in Hong Kong. Lately, he has been producing some light leaks but he’s still my favorite!

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

These “aging” self-portraits with the help of a friend meant a lot to me because I always wanted to see and feel what it would be like when I am much older. It’s also one of my personal photography projects. My constant fight with my inner fear.

Please share a Lomograph you wish you took and explain why.

It has to be the Aerochrome portraits by bccbarbosa!

Credits: bccbarbosa

His pictures are really surreal and beautiful! When I saw them I can’t get them out of my head and bought myself one roll. Unfortunately, Its still in the dry box since 2011. Haha!

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

I afraid I do not have alot. But I am happy to have published a simple and yet popular Tipster article — Tipster Silhouettes For Your Double.

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, what is that and why?

It has to be this oldie song: Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by B.J. Thomas.

Because I’m free with my Lomo camera and nothing’s worrying me! :D

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

It’s easy for me to say what should and shouldn’t be done but most importantly, shoot with all your heart and mind. Believe and immerse yourself in the world of analogue!

In my early adolescence, I liked to play table football. For my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me with a wonderful Subbuteo table soccer game set that I had wished for many months! Creativity means Connecting Things - A Splitzer for the LC-A 120

I don’t like to split. A split means distance, separation, it means categorical divergence. We split hairs, we split incomes, we split up. So the first thing we have to know here is that a Splitzer – different from what you might have thought - is not at all a nasty boy splitting things up.
