DIY Film Retracter

You wound your film backwards too far and now it is inside the cartridge, but you still want to do multiple exposures or develop by your own? Seems not to be a problem anymore with this tipster, how to build a simple instrument to get the film back.

You need:

  • thick paper or board
  • foto-glue or double-sided adhesive tape
  • scissors
  • a film, that’s wound to far

First you cut a slim strip (about 1 cm) from the board, there you stick the glue (or tape) on.

Now you’re taking the cartridge and insert the strip about 2 cm deep in the cartridge.

The glue has to show in the direction of the center of the cartridge

Now you’re holding the cartridge stable in your left hand, turning the pin (the one I showed you at the photo..) to you, as if you would wind much more backwards. You will feel when strip is pulled into the cartridge, it’s sticking at the film.

Everything you need to do now is to pull the strip outwards and here you have the film.

Ready!

I'll have to try my hand at this, as I can't use the proper film retriever to save my life! great tip :)

an other way to do it: you can use a little piece of film and make it wet on the matte side.. it will fix on the film in the roll really well ;)

i usually do that with a negative stripe with no pictures (the one with the barcode for example), put double-sided tape on it and do the rest as in this review. justin case you don't have cardboard. ;)

Cool. I just happen to have a couple of rolls that will not work with the "proper" retriever! Thanks!
