How about a Midsummer's Eve bonfire to keep you warm in these cold winter months?
How about a Midsummer’s Eve bonfire to keep you warm in these cold winter months?
Sankt Hans Aften, or St. John’s Eve, is the Danish pre-Christian celebration of summer solstice. Held on the eve of June 23rd, the evening before St John’s Day, it follows the Nordic tradition of celebrating a holiday on the previous evening. The traditional bonfires can be found all over; from huge ones in public parks with bands, fireworks and thousands of people, to tiny local ones in fields or dotting the coast lines. Usually the bonfire is lit around sunset, people stand around watching the fire, drinking red wine or singing, and sometimes a small effigy of a witch is burnt.
This year, I spent Sankt Hans at my mom’s place, celebrating the evening with a small neighborhood bonfire in Kirke Hyllinge, a tiny town on the coast of the Ise Fjord.
