Ask Your Guru: Oramasalexander Asks Renenob

We've been busy but we have never stopped questioning and answering analogue-related questions!

For those are the essentials of a well-fed analogue mind. Also the reason why we keep on having interviews for our favorite Ask Your Guru feature!

It may have been a while but in this comeback, we’re bringing you Newcomer oramasalexander from Orlando, Florida and LomoGuru renenob from Cavite, Philippines. These guys are a thousand miles away from each other so thank heavens for the internet!

A college teacher by profession, a student who’s taking up his post-graduate studies in Educational Psychology, a husband, a father, and a Lomographer (whew) Rene Nob or you got it right, renenob is no fresh name in our Community of Lomographers!

Being a member of the Lomographic Community for five years already, Rene has been only active in 2010. Great move in that one!

And so we meet Alexander Oramas or oramasalexander (these boys love word plays, eh?) who juggles playing the bass and his passion which is photography! One fateful visit at the Lomography Gallery Store in San Francisco and he knew that he just had to be a Lomographer!

Well, well, well. I guess it’s time to see how the question and answer of these two went!

Alexander Oramas (AO): If you could give a tip (from a photographer’s stand point) to your younger self, what would it be?

Rene Nob (RN): I think a lot of trial and error is necessary to become a Lomographer. So the only advice I would give my younger self is, save money for the LC-A! And, do not hesitate to be active in photo groups because you will learn a lot from them.

AO: Favorite film to shoot with?

RN: So far, Lomography X-Pro ISO 100! But then again, it had already been discontinued. I also love fresh [Fuji] Superia 400.

Lomography X-Pro and Fuji Superia ISO 400 samples.

AO: What keeps you motivated to keep on shooting?

RN: Hmm… I think it’s partly intrinsic; you just do these things simply because you enjoy doing it, even without any cerebral or conscious reason. Maybe it’s like therapy for me, it keeps me sane in the sense that I have something to do when I am burdened by stressors. Looking at the work of others is also motivating, but not necessarily simply imitating them. Part of me wants to keep shooting because I want to find my own identity as a Lomographer; similar to how hodachrome or lakandula, for example, found theirs.

AO: Anything in particular you enjoy shooting (trees, people, etc.) — Why?

RN: That’s one of my problems, or maybe it really isn’t a problem; I can’t seem to find a consistent pattern in what I shoot. I seem to enjoy shooting a lot of things. I like doubles, I like nature, portraits, I even appreciate street photography in its strictest sense. Oh! I love taking photos of my child, of our family.

AO: I see you’re a college professor; How do your students react to having a professor who’s into photography?

They love it! I would often walk around campus with a camera. Sometimes, my students even request that I take their photos. So in a way I am also documenting life in school. Sometimes I see students who have analogue or digital cameras, and I try to share some of the things I know hoping to inspire them more in taking up analogue photography or even Lomography.

Why, that was a short but personal one! Thanks to you two! Until the next Ask Your Guru! :)

Are you a curious Newcomer? Or maybe a LomoGuru who would like to share tips and tricks to our noobs? Then this is your time to be featured! Just drop me a line at Catch ya!
