We all know how planning for a party or an event is not as fun and hassle-free as simply just going to one. But, you don’t need to hire a professional to do the planning for you; it may entail a lot of work, but the good thing about it is that you’re free to customize and suit everything to you and your guests’ liking.

Timeline/Calendar

Making a timeline or a calendar can help you more or less streamline your planning and check if everything can be achieved on a realistic time frame. Set deadlines, plot errands, and assign people/committees on your timeline or calendar.

Fellow Party Planners

Speaking of people and/or committees, you will need all the help you can get, especially if you’re planning something for a sizable group (like a film photography/lomography group in your area). Get in touch with people and share with them your timeline and battleplan so they can decide if they can lend you a helping hand.

Theme

To make your party extra fun, consider planning a themed party. Think of something that you and your guests will like, appreciate, dress up for, and have fun participating in. Some of the tried and tested ones are sailor/nautical-themed party (like Lomography’s own La Sardina Launch parties, remember?), slumber parties, retro (as far back as the 60s or as recent as the 90s), and masquerade-themed parties.

Decorations, Music/Playlist , Activities

Once you have decided on whether to make your party or event a themed one or otherwise, you can proceed to nitpicking the details of the decorations, music, and activities. Make your themed party a more cohesive one by making decorations, choosing music, and selecting activities that match your theme.

Menu

Food and drinks, of course, are important elements of your party. If you have decided to have a themed party, you also have the option of designing a menu based on your chosen theme. For example, serve fish and chips for a nautical themed party, or chips and finger foods for a pajama party.

Guest List and Invitations

Next, you need to make your guest list and take care of the invitations. Come up with a design, determine how the actual will be made, make a rough estimate of the cost (or think of ways you can save up on it), and finalize the details of the event or party (RSVP, attire, date and time, venue, etc.).

Budget

Holding a party or event will of course involve a cost, and if you’re not the wealthy type to fund it out of your own money, you will have to come up with a budget and a plan on how to raise it. The easiest would be to collect a certain amount from the guests or event participants.

Grocery List

Now that you have more or less a concrete plan for your party or event, it’s time to create a grocery list of what you will need for the preparations: materials for invitation and decorations, ingredients for your menu, and miscellaneous items like trash bags and disposable utensils.
